The Yemeni minister was referring to the recent Israeli attacks against Iran-backed groups in the region including Hezbollah and the Houthis.

CBS’ “60 Minutes” aired a friendly interview Sunday with local German officials as the country’s government initiates a nationwide crackdown on offensive speech.
CBS’ Sharyn Alfonsi juxtaposed how, even as the United States allows “hate-filled or toxic” speech, Germany is “trying to bring some civility to the worldwide web by policing it in a way most Americans could never imagine.”
Germany has been raiding the homes of those it believes to be making offensive statements online. CBS rode along with six armed officers as they raided a suspect’s home and seized his electronics.

Alfonsi interviewed state prosecutors, Dr. Matthäus Fink, Svenja Meininghaus and Frank-Michael Laue, who explained that such laws come as a surprise even to German citizens.
Fink said the typical reaction is that “The people are surprised that this is really illegal, to post these kind [sic] of words… They don’t think it was illegal. And they say, ‘No, that’s my free speech,’ And we say, ‘No, you have free speech as well, but it also has its limits.'”
Alfonsi summarized that German law “prohibits any speech that could incite hatred or is deemed insulting” and asked the prosecutors about how this works in practice.
“It’s illegal to display Nazi symbolism, a swastika, or deny the Holocaust, that’s clear,” Alfonsi said. “Is it a crime to insult somebody in public?”
“Yes,” the prosecutors agreed.
“And it’s a crime to insult them online as well?” Alfonsi asked.
“Yes,” Meininghaus answered.
“The fine could be even higher if you insult someone in the internet,” Fink explained. “Because [on the] internet, it stays there. If we are talking face to face, you insult me, I insult you, okay, finish. But if you’re [on] the internet, if I insult you or a politician-“
Alfonsi reported that German law also “prohibits the spread of malicious gossip, violent threats, and fake quotes.”
Meininghaus explained how re-posting or redistributing false information is a violation as well.
“In the days of re-posting, it is a crime as well,” the prosecutor said. “Because the reader can’t distinguish whether you just invented this or just re-posted it. That’s the same for us.”
“The punishment for breaking hate speech laws can include jail time for repeat offenders,” Alfonsi narrated. “But in most cases a judge levies a stiff fine and sometimes keeps their devices.”
Laue laughed as he described how “shocked” people are when their phones are taken. “It’s kind of a punishment if you lose your smartphone. It’s even worse than the fine you have to pay.”
“Because your whole life is typically on your phone now,” Alfonsi observed.
CBS noted that there are 16 units with teams of investigators that monitor hate speech across the country. Laue, who leads the lower-Saxony unit, said that his office alone typically handles about 3,500 cases per year.

Rubio pushed back, “Free speech was not used to conduct a genocide… There was no free speech in Nazi Germany. There was none. There was also no opposition in Nazi Germany. They were the sole and only party that governed that country. So that’s not an accurate reflection of history.”

In February 2024, government veterinarians in the Czech Republic investigating a bird flu outbreak found themselves in the middle of a puzzling case.
The highly pathogenic H5N1 virus was devastating a flock of chickens on a highly secure farm, home of a breeding program that produced hybrid birds with specially colored feathers and eggs. A nearby facility owned by the same company also saw its chickens become infected.
How had the virus gotten in?
How had the virus gotten in? The facilities were state-of-the-art.The water on the chicken farms was filtered, supplied by their own wells. The chicken houses had giant fans that created one-way air flow through the barns. The facility was surrounded by sturdy, well-maintained fencing that kept wild animals out. Employees weren’t even allowed to keep their own chickens at home.

“It’s incredibly hard to actually measure,” he said, “to get the definitive data to say yes or no.”
Webbywasn’t involved with the new study but said he’s been in touch with a veterinarian in California who believes wind may have played a role in the recent spread of H5N1 between some cattle herds in the Central Valley.
But even if it is moving through the air, he said, that doesn’t necessarily make bird flu a bigger threat to people.
For one thing, the current versions of the H5N1 virus that are infecting animals don’t seem very good at infecting humans. The more the virus spreads, the more opportunities it has to hone its craft and get better at breaking into human cells, but for the moment, there’s no sign that it’s made this leap to being a fully human pathogen.
For another, it takes just a tiny amount of virus to make a bird sick, and it would probably take a lot more to infect a human. Particles, even viruses, disperse in air, meaning any virus in the wind is likely to be present in only very small amounts.
Animal Farm : How the virus jumped between farms
In the case of the chicken farm in the Czech Republic, scientists’ only clue about the origins of the outbreak came from a nearby duck-fattening farm that, a week earlier, had also seen bird flu tear through its flocks.
The duck farm, with 50,000 birds, was completely different from the chicken facility. It was near a lake that hosted wild ducks. The farmed ducks were kept in buildings with natural ventilation and a basic level of biosecurity – the precautions taken to safeguard animals on a farm.
The course of the infection on the duck farm looked very different than what played out with the chickens.

Three H5N1 strains sequenced from the duck farm were genetically identical to strains found in the birds that first got sick on each farm, suggesting that the duck farm had been the source of the chicken outbreak.
But how? The duck farm was nearly 5 miles west of the chicken facilities, and investigators couldn’t find any physical links between the two. None of the people who worked on the duck farm ever went to the chicken farms; even the contractors who dropped off supplies or came to collect waste were different. The investigators said they ruled out any human connections between the farms.
There were no major bodies of water near the chicken farm, which steered them away from the idea that wild birds might have carried in the flu virus.
Weather holds a clue
Then, the researchers checked the weather patterns for the week the chickens got sick. There had been a steady breeze from the west. There was extensive cloud cover, which would have blocked germ-killing UV light from the sun. The temperature was cool but not freezing, between 40 and 50 degrees, and viruses love cold air.
In other words, perfect conditions to transport a virus and allow it to survive a long trip.
Dr. Kamil Sedlak, who directs the State Veterinary Institute in Prague and is senior author on the study, says that after they explored all the possibilities, windborne spread was the best fit in this case.

“I think that under certain specific conditions, the spread of the avian influenza virus by wind can occur,” he said.
The Czech researchers published their study as a preprint, ahead of peer review.
Webby said the virus particles could also have hitched a ride on something larger, like dander from the ducks, and that’s what allowed them to travel so far.
The study authors didn’t try to sample the air near the duck or chicken farms for virus, and they note that previous air sampling studies in and around swine barns and poultry houses have detected high levels of avian influenza viruses. Concentrations of the virus quickly dissipate, though, as air travels away from barns.
That may be why the chickens got sick more slowly: They were getting a lower dose of the virus from very low levels carried in the air. The fact that the first chickens to die were near the air intake vents was another clue.
“I think that they’re making a compelling case based on the knowledge they had of the farms,” said Dr. Montse Torremorell, professor and chair of Veterinary Population Medicine at the University of Minnesota, who was not involved with the new study.
Torremorell conducted air sampling around poultry barns during the last major outbreak of avian influenza in the United States in 2015. She found high levels of infectious virus blowing out of the large exhaust fans in poultry houses.
It’s not just a matter of how much virus is blowing out into the air, she said, but also where it lands. Those plumes of infectious aerosols may end up on clothing, equipment and vehicles that can also carry the virus from one place to the next.
Layered approaches to protection
Torremorell said airborne spread should be something farms consider when they’re thinking about ways to protect their livestock and flocks.

“Often, people say, ‘Oh, it’s in the wind. I cannot do anything about it.’ Then they stop doing the basic biosecurity that it’s also very important that they have to do,” she said.
But she says they’re forgetting lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic about how stopping the spread of a virus requires layered approaches to protection. Current precautions like restricting entry to farms and wearing personal protective equipment should be kept in place, but filtering the air in barns could also help protect animals and farmworkers from bird flu, too.
Dr. Michael Osterholm, who directs the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, also thinks windborne spread is playing a role in H5N1 transmission now.
“I think there is more wind-driven H5N1 occurring right now in the community because of the number of aquatic of waterfowl that are infected,” he said.
Waterfowl like ducks and geese poop in lakes, he says, and wind blowing over that water may carry the virus to nearby farms.
“We’re in unprecedented territory right now,” Osterholm said. “It’s all over the country.”

Osterholm thinks airborne or windborne spread might account for some infections in which a source of the virus – like contact with a sick animal – couldn’t be identified. The recent case of the three veterinarians who tested positive for antibodies against the H5N1 virus at a conference comes to mind. Two of the three had no known exposure to sick animals.
“I think it’s very low-risk for humans to be infected with the virus like that, but I think it happens,” he said.

As the founders, those who possessed the true spirit of reform, pass away, their descendants come forward and “new-model the cause.” While blindly clinging to the creed of their fathers and refusing to accept any truth in advance of what they saw, the children of the reformers depart widely from their example of humility, self-denial, and renunciation of the world. Thus “the first simplicity disappears.” A worldly flood, flowing into the church, carries “with it its customs, practices, and idols.”
Alas, to what a fearful extent is that friendship of the world which is “enmity with God,” now cherished among the professed followers of Christ! How widely have the popular churches throughout Christendom departed from the Bible standard of humility, self-denial, simplicity, and godliness! GC 385.1 – GC 385.2
What was the origin of the great apostasy? How did the church first depart from the simplicity of the gospel? By conforming to the practices of paganism, to facilitate the acceptance of Christianity by the heathen. To secure converts, the exalted standard of the Christian faith was lowered, and as the result “a pagan flood, flowing into the church, carried with it its customs, practices, and idols.”—Gavazzi, Lectures, page 278. As the Christian religion secured the favor and support of secular rulers, it was nominally accepted by multitudes; but while in appearance Christians, many “remained in substance pagans , especially worshiping in secret their idols.”—Ibid., page 278. Miraculously, their living room furniture remained. Other rooms were trashed, littered with debris. In one room, someone had spray painted “Hamas” on the wall – Nassar said he didn’t know who did it or whether the house was used by fighters during the battles.

But the wreckage next door where his son is buried haunts Nassar. “Every minute I think about how to get my son out from under the rubble,” he said. “I can’t describe the torment so long as my son is not properly buried.”
He said he digs every day, but the only tool he has is a shovel, so he can’t lift the large slabs of concrete. “This morning, I was digging and searching, but I found nothing but some papers and clothes,” he said.

Nearby in Jabaliya, the Odeh family returned to find their building’s ground floor gutted. They had to set up a ladder to climb in and out of the second floor, where Yousef and his brother Mohammed Oudeh settled in with their families.

Trump’s national security advisor, Michael Waltz, had said the U.S. and Russia “negotiated an exchange” to ensure Fogel’s release, although he did not disclose what the U.S. was giving up. When asked by reporters on Tuesday whether the U.S. had given up anything in return for Fogel, Trump replied “not much” without offering additional details.

America: A New Jerusalem
Despite being perceived as violent intruders by Native Americans, European colonizers considered their discovery of America as the fulfillment of a Book of Revelation prophecy about a new city with diverse languages and nations. Cotton Mather, a Puritan clergyman in colonial New England, praised America as “the holy city” based on Revelation.
It was the desire for liberty of conscience that inspired the Pilgrims to brave the perils of the long journey across the sea, to endure the hardships and dangers of the wilderness, and with God’s blessing to lay, on the shores of America, the foundation of a mighty nation. Yet honest and God-fearing as they were, the Pilgrims did not yet comprehend the great principle of religious liberty. The freedom which they sacrificed so much to secure for themselves, they were not equally ready to grant to others. “Very few, even of the foremost thinkers and moralists of the seventeenth century, had any just conception of that grand principle, the outgrowth of the New Testament, which acknowledges God as the sole judge of human faith.”—Ibid. 5:297.The doctrine that God has committed to the church the right to control the conscience, and to define and punish heresy, is one of the most deeply rooted of papal errors.While the Reformers rejected the creed of Rome, they were not entirely free from her spirit of intolerance. The dense darkness in which, through the long ages of her rule, popery had enveloped all Christendom, had not even yet been wholly dissipated. Said one of the leading ministers in the colony of Massachusetts Bay: “It was toleration that made the world antichristian; and the church never took harm by the punishment of heretics.”—Ibid., vol. 5, p. 335. The regulation was adopted by the colonists that only church members should have a voice in the civil government. A kind of state church was formed, all the people being required to contribute to the support of the clergy, and the magistrates being authorized to suppress heresy. Three centuries later, the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, echoed a similar message. Lin notes the connection between Reagan’s speech and Revelation 21, which describes the city of God. Reagan called America a “shining city on a hill,” portraying it as a beacon of hope and reflecting themes from traditional Puritan beliefs and 20th-century American Evangelicals.
In other words, Reagan’s imagination reflects a prolonged expectation of the American religious elite on America as a New Jerusalem. However, the New Jerusalem has its own secular criteria.
When the holy city is not for everyone
Race is a crucial element. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese workers were categorized as the outsiders of the New Jerusalem. American elites likened Chinese symbols to demonic images. For instance, they perceived the dragon on the flag of the Qing Dynasty as the Satanic dragon in the Book of Revelation.
American writer Pierton W. Dooner, in his 1880 book “Last Days of the Republic,” depicts the Chinese as the demonic “Asiatic serpent”. This anti-Chinese rhetoric contributed to immigration restrictions, with U.S. Senators labeling China as “the apocalyptic whore and the enemies of God’s kingdom.”
What’s more, the ruling political class also used the description from the Book of Revelation to set up the standard of “cleanliness,” which means the exception of biological threats. Revelation 22 writes “who wash their robes […] may enter the city by the gates.” Some American nativists interpreted the text to set barriers for people with diseases and even unethical behaviors.
To control immigration, American lawmakers created a system akin to Revelation’s Book of Life, called, “The Book of White Life.” According to Lin, this book records who is considered “white enough to have citizenship” in the New Jerusalem of America. Congress developed a “Book of Deeds” to further specify “The Book of White Life,” outlining the actions required to enter the United States.
We can see a scripture-based selective process to exclude those unwanted. Eventually, this thinking shapes the extreme state policy adopted by the current most powerful figure: Trump, who won election for a second time this past November.
From prejudice to policy
Many modern American politicians favored a passage from Revelation 21. This passage vividly describes a holy city with ” a great, high wall with 12 gates” and “12 foundations.” These politicians often invoke the imagery of the New Jerusalem, with its walls and gates, to convince the public to support anti-immigration policy.
Many American political figures believe that America is a land blessed by God and that constructing a wall to restrict immigration aligns with divine will. An Iowa congressman posted on social media: “Heaven has a wall, a gate and a strict immigration policy. Hell has open borders.”
But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

Furthermore, the narrative of America also represents a gateway of meritocracy, as described in Revelation, that draws in those who could “enrich the New Jerusalem.” No surprise that Trump’s slogan is “Make America Great Again.”

Marvelous in her shrewdness and cunning is the Roman Church. She can read what is to be. She bides her time, seeing that the Protestant churches are paying her homage in their acceptance of the false sabbath and that they are preparing to enforce it by the very means which she herself employed in bygone days. The line of prophecy in which these symbols are found begins with Revelation 12, with the dragon that sought to destroy Christ at His birth. The dragon is said to be Satan (Revelation 12:9); he it was that moved upon Herod to put the Saviour to death. But the chief agent of Satan in making war upon Christ and His people during the first centuries of the Christian Era was the Roman Empire, in which paganism was the prevailing religion. Thus while the dragon, primarily, represents Satan, it is, in a secondary sense, a symbol of pagan Rome. In chapter 13 (verses 1-10) is described another beast, “like unto a leopard,” to which the dragon gave “his power, and his seat, and great authority.” This symbol, as most Protestants have believed, represents the papacy, which succeeded to the power and seat and authority once held by the ancient Roman empire. Of the leopardlike beast it is declared: “There was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies…. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.” This prophecy, which is nearly identical with the description of the little horn of Daniel 7, unquestionably points to the papacy. “Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.” And, says the prophet, “I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death.” And again: “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.” The forty and two months are the same as the “time and times and the dividing of time,” three years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7—the time during which the papal power was to oppress God’s people. This period, as stated in preceding chapters, began with the supremacy of the papacy, A.D. 538, and terminated in 1798. At that time the pope was made captive by the French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was fulfilled, “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.” GC 438.2 – GC 439.2

The churches of Africa held the Sabbath as it was held by the papal church before her complete apostasy. While they kept the seventh day in obedience to the commandment of God, they abstained from labor on the Sunday in conformity to the custom of the church. Upon obtaining supreme power, Rome had trampled upon the Sabbath of God to exalt her own; but the churches of Africa, hidden for nearly a thousand years, did not share in this apostasy. When brought under the sway of Rome, they were forced to set aside the true and exalt the false sabbath; but no sooner had they regained their independence than they returned to obedience to the fourth commandment. (See Appendix.) These records of the past clearly reveal the enmity of Rome toward the true Sabbath and its defenders, and the means which she employs to honor the institution of her creating. The word of God teaches that these scenes are to be repeated as Roman Catholics and Protestants shall unite for the exaltation of the Sunday. GC 578.1 – GC 578.2

It was demonstrated that the principles of the Bible are the surest safeguards of national greatness. The feeble and isolated colonies grew to a confederation of powerful states, and the world marked with wonder the peace and prosperity of “a church without a pope, and a state without a king.”
But continually increasing numbers were attracted to the shores of America, actuated by motives widely different from those of the first Pilgrims. Though the primitive faith and purity exerted a widespread and molding power, yet its influence became less and less as the numbers increased of those who sought only worldly advantage.

The great principle so nobly advocated by Robinson and Roger Williams, that truth is progressive, that Christians should stand ready to accept all the light which may shine from God’s holy word, was lost sight of by their descendants. The Protestant churches of America,—and those of Europe as well,—so highly favored in receiving the blessings of the Reformation, failed to press forward in the path of reform. Though a few faithful men arose, from time to time, to proclaim new truth and expose long-cherished error, the majority, like the Jews in Christ’s day or the papists in the time of Luther, were content to believe as their fathers had believed and to live as they had lived. Therefore religion again degenerated into formalism; and errors and superstitions which would have been cast aside had the church continued to walk in the light of God’s word, were retained and cherished. Thus the spirit inspired by the Reformation gradually died out, until there was almost as great need of reform in the Protestant churches as in the Roman Church in the time of Luther. There was the same worldliness and spiritual stupor, a similar reverence for the opinions of men, and substitution of human theories for the teachings of God’s word.
The wide circulation of the Bible in the early part of the nineteenth century, and the great light thus shed upon the world, was not followed by a corresponding advance in knowledge of revealed truth, or in experimental religion. Satan could not, as in former ages, keep God’s word from the people; it had been placed within the reach of all; but in order still to accomplish his object, he led many to value it but lightly. Men neglected to search the Scriptures, and thus they continued to accept false interpretations, and to cherish doctrines which had no foundation in the Bible.
Seeing the failure of his efforts to crush out the truth by persecution, Satan had again resorted to the plan of compromise which led to the great apostasy and the formation of the Church of Rome. He had induced Christians to ally themselves, not now with pagans, but with those who, by their devotion to the things of this world, had proved themselves to be as truly idolaters as were the worshipers of graven images. And the results of this union were no less pernicious now than in former ages; pride and extravagance were fostered under the guise of religion, and the churches became corrupted. Satan continued to pervert the doctrines of the Bible, and traditions that were to ruin millions were taking deep root. The church was upholding and defending these traditions, instead of contending for “the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” Thus were degraded the principles for which the Reformers had done and suffered so much.
