When Ars Technica‘s Eric Berger asked Musk if he was “supposed ggesting that the ISS be deorbited prior to 2030,” Musk stopped short of offering any concrete plans, arguing that “the decision is up to the President, but my recommendation is as soon as possible.”

It’s a baffling new development, considering that plans for the station’s destruction were already well underway.

Musk also appears to be throwing the entire scientific community under the bus by arguing that there’s “little incremental utility.”

Despite its old age — the cracks are literally starting to show — the ISS has served and still serves an extremely important function, allowing scientists to conduct important experiments in microgravity, including the feasibility of humanity embarking on long journeys through outer space.

Nasrallah, who had served as Hezbollah’s secretary general for more than 30 years, was killed on September 27 as Israel ramped up its attacks on southern Lebanon. His funeral is scheduled for February 23.

The Yemeni minister was referring to the recent Israeli attacks against Iran-backed groups in the region including Hezbollah and the Houthis.


Both groups launched parallel attacks against Israel during its war in Gaza to show support for Palestinians.


The Houthis, who control northern Yemen, also carried out more than 100 attacks on ships off the shores of Yemen since November 2023, disrupting global shipping and causing route changes and losses.


The Palestinian militant group Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023 killed about 1,200 people in southern Israel, according to Israeli tallies.

CBS’ Sharyn Alfonsi juxtaposed how, even as the United States allows “hate-filled or toxic” speech, Germany is “trying to bring some civility to the worldwide web by policing it in a way most Americans could never imagine.”

Alfonsi interviewed state prosecutors, Dr. Matthäus Fink, Svenja Meininghaus and Frank-Michael Laue, who explained that such laws come as a surprise even to German citizens.

Alfonsi summarized that German law “prohibits any speech that could incite hatred or is deemed insulting” and asked the prosecutors about how this works in practice.

“It’s illegal to display Nazi symbolism, a swastika, or deny the Holocaust, that’s clear,” Alfonsi said. “Is it a crime to insult somebody in public?”

“Yes,” the prosecutors agreed.

“And it’s a crime to insult them online as well?” Alfonsi asked.

“Yes,” Meininghaus answered.

“The fine could be even higher if you insult someone in the internet,” Fink explained. “Because [on the] internet, it stays there. If we are talking face to face, you insult me, I insult you, okay, finish. But if you’re [on] the internet, if I insult you or a politician-“

Alfonsi reported that German law also “prohibits the spread of malicious gossip, violent threats, and fake quotes.”

Meininghaus explained how re-posting or redistributing false information is a violation as well.

“In the days of re-posting, it is a crime as well,” the prosecutor said. “Because the reader can’t distinguish whether you just invented this or just re-posted it. That’s the same for us.”

“The punishment for breaking hate speech laws can include jail time for repeat offenders,” Alfonsi narrated. “But in most cases a judge levies a stiff fine and sometimes keeps their devices.”

Laue laughed as he described how “shocked” people are when their phones are taken. “It’s kind of a punishment if you lose your smartphone. It’s even worse than the fine you have to pay.”

“Because your whole life is typically on your phone now,” Alfonsi observed.

The nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman was involved in a collision with a merchant ship near Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea on Wednesday night, a Navy spokesperson said Thursday.

The Besiktas-M, a 617-foot (188-meter) long bulk carrier, had exited the Suez Canal and was heading to Romania, according to tracking website Marine Traffic.

The Truman, a 1,100-foot-long Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, was heading toward the canal, tracking data indicates.

Marine expert Sal Mercogliano, a professor at Campbell University, said in an X Spaces conversation that the area where the collision occurred, near an anchorage off Egypt’s Port Said, had around 100 ships in it at the time of the incident.

Former US Navy captain Carl Schuster, an instructor at Hawaii Pacific University, said such conditions leave little room for error.

Fogel added: “I am in awe of what they all did.”

He said he feels “like the luckiest man on Earth right now.”

Trump’s national security advisor, Michael Waltz, had said the U.S. and Russia “negotiated an exchange” to ensure Fogel’s release, although he did not disclose what the U.S. was giving up. Some previous negotiations have involved releases of Russians by the U.S. or its allies in exchange for a detained American.

When asked by reporters on Tuesday whether the U.S. had given up anything in return for Fogel, Trump replied “not much” without offering additional details.

Fogel’s family thanked Trump and others who worked to secure his release.

“We are beyond grateful, relieved, and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband, and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home,” the family said in a statement.
