This week I saw a depressing article entitled “U.N. issues famine warning,” which warned, “Up to 80 million people will be plunged into hunger if climate targets are not met.”
The situation, we are told, is dire. According to the article: “The world is advancing toward a catastrophic future where tens of millions of people will be at risk of famine unless climate change is adequately addressed, the United Nations’ human rights chief warned at a debate on Monday. Speaking to officials at the U.N. Human Rights Council event in Geneva, Switzerland, Volker Turk said extreme weather events were having a significant negative impact on crops, herds and ecosystems, prompting further concerns about global food availability.”

Still quoting the article: “‘More than 828 million people faced hunger in 2021,’ Turk said. ‘And climate change is projected to place up to 80 million more people at risk of hunger by the middle of this century.’ He added: ‘Our environment is burning. It’s melting. It’s depleting. It’s drying. It’s dying’ and that these factors will combine to lead humanity towards a ‘dystopian future’ unless urgent and immediate action is taken by environmental policymakers.”

What isn’t immediately clear is how famine can be averted by producing less food; yet producing less food is precisely what governments around the world are imposing on their farmers in the interests of meeting climate goals.
After forcibly changing the nation’s agriculture to organic, 90% of Sri Lankans are now facing hunger after the agricultural system collapsed.

Irish farmers say they will be forced to cull up to 1.3 million cows to meet climate targets. A government plan to cut agriculture emissions by 25% by 2030 will drive many farms into bankruptcy.
The Netherlands is the world’s second-biggest exporter of farm produce, yet the Dutch government is sabotaging their own farmers. Proposals for tackling nitrogen emissions mean an estimated 11,000 farms will close.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is slated to impose a 30% reduction in fertilizer emissions, sparking intense backlash from farmers who argue the target will decrease crop output, increase prices and cost farmers billions in lost revenue.
There are many more examples, but you get the picture. This doesn’t count wartime interruptions of food production, such as the Russia-Ukraine war. It’s clear that any coming famines predicted by the U.N. are being orchestrated. Why else is food production being shut down so aggressively in the name of saving the earth?
This is the junction where I make the obligatory recommendation for everyone to get involved in taking control of their own food production whenever possible. Remember, Victory Gardens provided one-third to one-half of America’s fruits and vegetables during World War II. That said, while food prices will no doubt continue to soar, America is not likely to see famine. Instead, this dire scenario is likely to be played out in many Third World countries, devastating the populations.
There are few things more heartless than condemning people to die by starvation. Famines are cruel, capricious things. In ancient times, crop failures could happen for endless reasons: locusts, plant diseases, floods, droughts, etc. But in modern times, the vast majority of famines have been man-made. It is impossible to understate the horror of such events.
So here we are, looking into the yawning chasm of an unknown future, and being warned that famine once again is on the horizon. If this should come to pass, once again it will be a man-made event – and not because of climate change, but because of meddling governments fighting for power.

Comically, some of the focus of the Biden administration to develop sustainable farming practices includes spending $1.5 million on a program aimed at “empowering” female climate-change activists in the “patriarchal” society of northern Kenya. I doubt this will help food production, but it’s an example of Your Tax Dollars at Work, and why government programs invariably make things worse.

Since those shortages happen far away in distant countries, what do they care? It’s not like they’re the ones who will go hungry, after all. In fact, a Reuters article points out: “The European Union is divided on how to help poorer nations fight a growing food crisis and address shortages of fertilizers caused by the war in Ukraine, with some fearing a plan to invest in plants in Africa would clash with EU green goals.“
Let that sink in. They’re saying if taking steps to save starving Africans clashes with EU green goals, we shouldn’t do it. This, folks, is the personification of evil.
Government takeover of farms is not uncommon, nor are the resulting famines. The Soviets’ collectivization of farms ultimately led to the Ukrainian Holodomor. The Great Chinese Famine (which occurred as a result of the “Great Leap Forward” and “people’s communes”) is regarded as one of the greatest man-made disasters in human history. Is it any wonder Dutch farmers are fighting the same takeover agenda by their government? It’s not hard to see the end result.
At the risk of repeating a cliché, whoever controls the food controls the people. The weaponization of food is nothing new in the annals of history, except this time it’s being done on a far more international scale. Globalists and their useful idiots (the climate activists) have been desperate to reduce the human population for generations. If they can’t do it indirectly, then by golly they’ll do it directly by creating food shortages.

Satan is using all his science in playing the game of life for human souls. His angels are mingling with men and instructing them in the mysteries of evil. As part of a survey to uncover some of the oldest known stars in the Universe, scientists conducted a comprehensive search for these ancient, but elusive, stars, and found that the measures they spin around the galactic center are relatively sedate, in spite of the chaos around them.
Their findings, led by astronomer Anke Arentsen of the University of Cambridge in the UK, have been presented at the UK’s annual National Astronomy Meeting.
We can tell how old a star is based on how much metal is in it. When the first stars in the Universe formed, they had to make themselves out of the elemental material available at the time – mostly hydrogen and helium. But the nuclear furnaces burning in their cores started fusing the atoms of hydrogen into heavier things, from helium all the way up to iron.
Then, when they exploded in messy supernovae, they seeded these heavier elements throughout space, along with even heavier elements forged in energetic split-second supernova processes. Subsequent stars therefore started their lives with a greater proportion of heavier material. The younger a star is, the more metal it’s likely to have.
Anke and her colleagues embarked on a project called the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) to try and find them. By analyzing the spectrum of light emanating from a certain star, astronomers can find wavelengths amplified or dampened by the presence of certain elements. They looked for an elemental signature consistent with stars that are very low in metals, and identified around 8,000 candidates.
Follow-up observations confirmed the chemical compositions of metal-poor stars, resulting in a sample of around 1,300 ancient stars in the galactic center. Because they found so many, the researchers were then able to conduct population studies.
They used data from the Gaia observatory, which is an ongoing project to map the three-dimensional positions and motions of the stars in the Milky Way. With this, the researchers were able to determine the galactic orbits of their old stars.

Arentsen and her colleagues found that orbits of the ancient stars around the galactic center are relatively slow.
In addition, the older stars have more chaotic orbits, but they still have an average orbit around the galactic center.
Finally, the orbits of the stars are mostly contained entirely within the galactic center. Even those stars on elliptical orbits tend to stay mostly within the central region of the Milky Way.
“It is exciting to think that we are seeing stars that formed in the earliest phases of the Milky Way, previously largely out of reach. These stars likely formed less than a billion years after the Big Bang, so are relics from the early Universe,” Arentsen says.
“The available data for these ancient objects is growing rapidly. I’m excited to see what we will learn about these first stars to populate our Galaxy in the next few years!”

Lack of communication from the Government meant public health chiefs turned to TV broadcasts to get the latest information on the pandemic, Hertfordshire’s director of public health has told the UK Covid-19 Inquiry.
Professor Jim McManus gave evidence to the inquiry on Wednesday (July 5) in his role as president of the Association of Directors of Public Heath.
As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand will make them objects of universal execration. It will be urged that the few who stand in opposition to an institution of the church and a law of the state ought not to be tolerated; that it is better for them to suffer than for whole nations to be thrown into confusion and lawlessness. The same argument many centuries ago was brought against Christ by the “rulers of the people.” “It is expedient for us,” said the wily Caiaphas, “that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.” John 11:50. This argument will appear conclusive; and a decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts. The people of God will then be plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob’s trouble. “Thus saith the Lord: We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace…. All faces are turned into paleness. Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” Jeremiah 30:5-7. It has been shown that the United States is the power represented by the beast with lamblike horns, and that this prophecy will be fulfilled when the United States shall enforce Sunday observance, which Rome claims as the special acknowledgment of her supremacy. After this, says the prophet, “his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Paul states plainly that the “man of sin” will continue until the second advent. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the revelator declares, also referring to the papacy: “All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life.” Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman Church. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, students of prophecy in the United States have presented this testimony to the world. In the events now taking place is seen a rapid advance toward the fulfillment of the prediction. With Protestant teachers there is the same claim of divine authority for Sundaykeeping, and the same lack of Scriptural evidence, as with the papal leaders who fabricated miracles to supply the place of a command from God. The assertion that God’s judgments are visited upon men for their violation of the Sunday-sabbath, will be repeated; already it is beginning to be urged. During the hour-long evidence session, Prof McManus was asked to outline the role of public health, which is now based within higher-tier authorities, such as county councils.

The role includes a wide range of health protection and improvement functions, including drug and alcohol, tobacco, suicide prevention and sexual health, as well as outbreak management plans for infectious diseases such as measles.
Asked about budgets, he said allocations to local authorities had decreased in recent years, with some areas of greater deprivation faring worst for funding per head. He later suggested that emergency preparedness could have been better without those cuts and the impact of austerity.
Prof McManus said that the national plan had been unclear and seemed to prepare for flu when a coronavirus would have been a plausible scenario.

And he suggested that in preparation, there was a need to do more to address health inequalities. He said this was because those people with the least access to health services were often the most vulnerable and the least able to deal with the multiple impacts.

Romanism is now regarded by Protestants with far greater favor than in former years. In those countries where Catholicism is not in the ascendancy, and the papists are taking a conciliatory course in order to gain influence, there is an increasing indifference concerning the doctrines that separate the reformed churches from the papal hierarchy; the opinion is gaining ground that, after all, we do not differ so widely upon vital points as has been supposed, and that a little concession on our part will bring us into a better understanding with Rome. The time was when Protestants placed a high value upon the liberty of conscience which had been so dearly purchased. They taught their children to abhor popery and held that to seek harmony with Rome would be disloyalty to God. But how widely different are the sentiments now expressed!
The defenders of the papacy declare that the church has been maligned, and the Protestant world are inclined to accept the statement. Many urge that it is unjust to judge the church of today by the abominations and absurdities that marked her reign during the centuries of ignorance and darkness. They excuse her horrible cruelty as the result of the barbarism of the times and plead that the influence of modern civilization has changed her sentiments.
Have these persons forgotten the claim of infallibility put forth for eight hundred years by this haughty power? So far from being relinquished, this claim was affirmed in the nineteenth century with greater positiveness than ever before. As Rome asserts that the “church never erred; nor will it, according to the Scriptures, ever err ” (John L. von Mosheim, Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, book 3, century II, part 2, chapter 2, section 9, note 17), how can she renounce the principles which governed her course in past ages? GC 563.1 – GC 564.1

As the name suggests, gamma ray bursts are intense pulses of gamma radiation that fire off in beams like a lighthouse. The most common cause is when a massive star collapses into a black hole, but they also occur from collisions between binary stellar remnants – like neutron stars or white dwarfs – or maybe when stars are swallowed up by black holes. But a recent detection appears to have come from a previously unknown source.

This is atheism, and the nation represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance. “The great city” is also compared, “spiritually,” to Sodom. The corruption of Sodom in breaking the law of God was especially manifested in licentiousness. And this sin was also to be a pre-eminent characteristic of the nation that should fulfill the specifications of this scripture. According to the words of the prophet, then, a little before the year 1798 some power of satanic origin and character would rise to make war upon the Bible. And in the land where the testimony of God’s two witnesses should thus be silenced, there would be manifest the atheism of the Pharaoh and the licentiousness of Sodom. The Serpent of the Ocean is located on the coast at Saint-Brevin-les-Pins in Loire-Atlantique on the west coast of France. The area was part of the historic Duchy of Brittany. Brittany is a historical region that was very different from the rest of France. It has a Celtic heritage and has its own Breton language (related to Welsh and Irish). The reason why the island of Great Britain is called “Great” is to distinguish it from “Lesser Brittany” in France (they are both called “Bretagne” in French).

The Serpent of the Ocean has been constructed out of aluminum and stretches for 130 meters or 430 feet. It is a monumental work of art well worth seeing for anyone exploring the Brittany region of France. It was built around 20 years ago in 2012 by the artist Huang Yong Ping.
While sea monsters (like the Kraken) are not real, a glimpse at the Serpent of the Ocean is enough to set one’s mind wild. It is an imaginary giant sea serpent emerging from the Loire estuary where it joins the Atlantic Ocean. The art installation is both simple and yet powerful.

At low tide, the water comes up to the tail of the sea serpent. At high tide, the water reaches the head. The monumental structure is therefore submerged at high tide and exposed at low tide. Go at low tide, and it is possible to walk around the sea serpent. Go at low tide, and only the head and the top of the vertebrae are visible. It is an attraction that appears dramatically different depending on the tides, the weather, and the roughness of the sea.
It is not without reason that the claim has been put forth in Protestant countries that Catholicism differs less widely from Protestantism than in former times. There has been a change; but the change is not in the papacy. Catholicism indeed resembles much of the Protestantism that now exists, because Protestantism has so greatly degenerated since the days of the Reformers.
As the Protestant churches have been seeking the favor of the world, false charity has blinded their eyes. While the structure is sturdy, the skeleton terminates with a thin, whip-like tail. It cuts and moves gracefully with the movement of the water, making it appear as if the tail is propelling the serpent toward the shore. The Serpent of the Ocean’s skeleton was also built to mirror the curves of the nearby Saint-Nazaire bridge.

Huang Yong Ping was a famous Chinese artist who moved to France in 1989 (he died in 2019 at the age of 65). He was born in 1954 in Xiamen, China. He was famous for being one of the most provocative and controversial artists of the Chinese art scene during the 1980s. Many of his works of art are very large and can’t be moved or auctioned.

He sometimes used creatures from Chinese mythology to inspire people (as with this eye-catching serpent). It is claimed the message of the Sea Serpent is environmental, speaking to the mistreatment of the oceans.
It is an inspiring experience to see this menacingly undead snake accumulating algae over the years. Later in 2016, Huang Yong Ping built another even larger serpent skeleton as part of the Monumenta series for the Grand Palais in Paris. That massive serpent measured some 240 meters or 790 feet.
As we near the close of time, there will be greater and still greater external parade of heathen power; heathen deities will manifest their signal power and will exhibit themselves before the cities of the world, and this delineation has already begun to be fulfilled. One photo shows the young woman sprawled facedown on the ground in a graduation gown, her tasseled cap discarded to the side.Others show her slumped over a chair, collapsed against a wall, and hanging listlessly over a staircase banister.
But in vain are men’s dreams of progress, in vain all efforts for the uplifting of humanity, if they neglect the one Source of hope and help for the fallen race. “Every good gift and every perfect gift” (James 1:17) is from God. There is no true excellence of character apart from Him. And the only way to God is Christ. He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.” John 14:6. But the woman in these images hasn’t been harmed – at least, not physically. These are graduation photos, and their theme is “being more dead than alive,” according to the accompanying caption.
The heart of God yearns over His earthly children with a love stronger than death. In giving up His Son, He has poured out to us all heaven in one gift. The Saviour’s life and death and intercession, the ministry of angels, the pleading of the Spirit, the Father working above and through all, the unceasing interest of heavenly beings,—all are enlisted in behalf of man’s redemption.

Oh, let us contemplate the amazing sacrifice that has been made for us! In recent weeks, Chinese social media has become awash with tongue-in-cheek images like these, posted by fresh graduates who have chosen to eschew the typical polished portraits in favor of shots they say offer a truer reflection of the tough reality they face.
A record 11.6 million college students are expected to enter the job market this summer, but their prospects look bleak. Urban youth unemployment is at record levels, reaching 20.8% in May, and an influx of new job seekers will only increase the competition.

At the same time, the job market they will be competing in is under stress – posing a risk to the government, which has so far been unable to reverse a trend partially of its own making. The slowing economy has been battered by the government’s now-abandoned strict zero-Covid policy and a regulatory crackdown across the private sector, which accounts for 80% of jobs nationwide.
The work of salvation in both the Old and the New Testament dispensation is the same. Christ was the foundation of the whole Jewish economy. The types and shadows under which the Jews worshipped all pointed forward to the world’s Redeemer. It was by faith in a coming Saviour that sinners were saved then. Among the industries hardest hit are tech and education, two sectors that would normally attract large graduate intakes.
All this makes for a depressing picture for students, many of whom already feel exhausted and discouraged after navigating China’s notoriously competitive education system to reach this point – with little to show for it.
The Bible was held as the foundation of faith, the source of wisdom, and the charter of liberty. Its principles were diligently taught in the home, in the school, and in the church, and its fruits were manifest in thrift, intelligence, purity, and temperance. One might be for years a dweller in the Puritan settlement, “and not see a drunkard, or hear an oath, or meet a beggar.”—Bancroft, pt. 1, ch. 19, par. 25. It was demonstrated that the principles of the Bible are the surest safeguards of national greatness. The feeble and isolated colonies grew to a confederation of powerful states, and the world marked with wonder the peace and prosperity of “a church without a pope, and a state without a king.” But continually increasing numbers were attracted to the shores of America, actuated by motives widely different from those of the first Pilgrims. “This master’s degree…is finally…finished,” one student wrote on the Chinese app Xiaohongshu, next to a photo of herself on the ground, barely clinging to her graduation cap and thesis packet. In another picture, she pretends to throw her thesis into a recycling bin.
In the comments, some younger students anxiously debate whether it’s worth applying for graduate school, while older peers commiserate. One remarked: “Great post, it perfectly reflects the mental state of graduate students.”

But this has led to a mismatch between their skills and expectations, and the available opportunities. And with a record number of graduates entering the jobs market, some are concerned their degrees are becoming less valuable to employers.
This has pushed many to pursue postgraduate degrees in the hope of gaining an edge: more than 6.5 million master’s degrees have been granted in the past decade, and more than 600,000 doctorate degrees, according to China’s Ministry of Education.
The pandemic made job hunting even harder – prompting the government to order universities to admit more master’s applicants in 2020, state media reported.
But even a master’s or PhD is no guarantee of a job.

Li had originally planned to enter the workforce straight after graduating; she had entered her PhD program right after her undergraduate degree, and all those years of school were quite enough.
But despite submitting “countless resumes,” none of the recruiters or employers replied, she said.
She recalled going to a job fair at her school, and seeing recruiters throw “a thick pile of resumes into the trash when they wrapped up. Because they are not short of people.”
Now, she plans to go overseas for a post-doctoral program, hoping the international experience might boost her chances of finding a position back home.
Dark humor
Despite the graduates’ limited prospects, their “more dead than alive” photos highlight the dark humor found in the face of challenging odds.
After being inspired by examples online, Li took her own graduation photos, which are funny despite the tiredness depicted. “I thought I would remember such graduation photos for the rest of my life,” she told CNN.
In one, she droops over the back of a park bench in her graduation robes. Another shows her on the ground, folded in half like a puppet with its strings cut.

“I didn’t think about anything else but being happy,” she said, emphasizing that the point was to celebrate graduating after completing her arduous PhD program.
Another take on the trend shows grinning students Photoshopped in front of burning buildings, sometimes flashing an enthusiastic thumbs up.
Similarly, some graduates say the trend is just a fun twist on a longstanding student tradition – one user argued that “stereotypical” graduation photos with books and bouquets were “a lot less interesting.”
Still, as Li acknowledged, there is a reason so many people seem to resonate with the trend.
“I saw a comment saying they could empathize with (my photo),” she said. “Maybe everyone studying for a PhD is very depressed. There was a popular saying not long ago that anyone studying for a PhD is crazy.”
Compounding crises
China is not alone in suffering a high youth unemployment rate. As Goldman Sachs analysts pointed out in a recent report, European countries such as Spain and Italy have also been grappling with rates surpassing 20%.
But China’s unique demographics make the stakes particularly high, according to the analysts, who highlight “how important the youth population is to China’s economy.”
Young people are big spenders in rent, transportation, communication and culture, they point out, and an increasingly unemployed, moneyless youth could mean less consumer spending – and a weaker national economy.
The unemployment rate also threatens to compound several other overlapping problems.
With China’s population of around 1.4 billion aging rapidly and beginning to shrink, the economy badly needs more young workers so it can support the health and social needs of the fast-expanding elderly group. But many young people are delaying or deciding not to start families due to their mounting economic struggles – further compounding the problem.
Joblessness is only part of the reason for the growing disillusionment and loss of trust in authorities many young people feel.
Stagnating wages, limited upward mobility, unaffordable housing and rising costs of living have added to their frustrations. The government’s Covid lockdowns and draconian measures further sowed resentment – even igniting nationwide protests in a rare and remarkable show of dissent last year.
One recent post on China’s Twitter-like platform Weibo summed up the darkening mood. “Why is everyone reluctant to have children? The reason is very simple,” they wrote. “You spend more than 20 years of energy, sweat, and a million yuanto raise a college student who can’t even find a job after graduation – or if they do, it’s with a monthly salary of 3,000 yuan ($418). Every day you start work early, finish late, and take out loans to buy your child a house and car.”
But their attempts to create more positions for young people could have “relatively limited” use, warned the Goldman Sachs report.
Things are expected to get worse in the coming months, the report said. The flood of new graduates into the workforce means the unemployment rate could rise several percentage points by late summer before starting to decline at the end of the quarter.
While the skills mismatch issue might gradually ease with the right policies, it warned this was a “difficult” task that was “unlikely to yield significant improvement in the short run.”
Instead, China will likely see high youth unemployment continue “in the next few years,” it said.
And that spells trouble for millions of students across the country, who are preparing with growing dread to enter a workforce without enough space for them.
