BEIJING (Reuters) – No country should bypass international laws to authorise resource exploration in the seabed, China’s foreign ministry said on Monday, following a report of U.S. plans to stockpile deep-sea metals to counter China’s dominance in the sector.

The Trump administration is drafting an executive order to enable stockpiling of deep-sea metals found on the Pacific Ocean seabed to counter China’s dominance of battery minerals and rare earth supply chains, the Financial Times reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the matter.

China has placed some rare earth elements under export restrictions in retaliation to U.S. President Donald Trump’s steep tariffs on Chinese goods, potentially cutting the U.S. off from critical minerals vital to everything from smartphones to electric car batteries.
Following the report, the Chinese foreign ministry said that under international law, the seabed and its resources “are the common heritage of mankind.”

President Donald Trump issued a Palm Sunday message at the start of Holy Week renewing his administration’s promise “to defend the Christian faith in our schools, military, workplaces, hospitals, and halls of government.”
In rejecting the truth, men reject its Author. In trampling upon the law of God, they deny the authority of the Lawgiver. It is as easy to make an idol of false doctrines and theories as to fashion an idol of wood or stone. Satan leads men to conceive of God in a false character, as having attributes which He does not possess. Trump said he and first lady Melania Trump “join in prayer with Christians celebrating the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ – the living Son of God who conquered death, freed us from sin, and unlocked the gates of Heaven for all of humanity.” The presidential message reiterated how Holy Week begins “with Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday” and culminates “in the Paschal Triduum, which begins on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, followed by Good Friday.” The week reaches its “pinnacle in the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night.”
“This week is a time of reflection for Christians to memorialize Jesus’ crucifixion – and to prepare their hearts, minds, and souls for His miraculous Resurrection from the dead,” Trump wrote.
“During this sacred week, we acknowledge that the glory of Easter Sunday cannot come without the sacrifice Jesus Christ made on the cross,” the president said. “In His final hours on Earth, Christ willingly endured excruciating pain, torture, and execution on the cross out of a deep and abiding love for all His creation. Through His suffering, we have redemption. Through His death, we are forgiven of our sins. Through His Resurrection, we have hope of eternal life.”

“On Easter morning, the stone is rolled away, the tomb is empty, and light prevails over darkness—signaling that death does not have the final word,” Trump said.

The Holy Week proclamation on Sunday is first on the docket of a series of roll-outs and events expected before Easter organized by the newly established White House Faith Office.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Digital that Trump delivered on his promise to millions of Christians in creating the office. She drew a “sharp contrast” with the Biden administration, which marked Easter Sunday, which fell on March 31, 2024, the most important holiday on the Christian Church calendar, as Transgender Day of Visibility.

Jennifer Korn, faith director of the White House Faith Office, told Fox News Digital the administration is gearing up for “extraordinary” celebrations during Holy Week to treat the Easter season “with the observance it deserves.”
On Monday, Trump is expected to release a Holy Week video and will host an Easter dinner on Wednesday evening. On Holy Thursday, the president is expected to host a staff worship service at the White House, where Pastor Paula White, the senior advisor to the White House Faith Office, the Rev. Franklin Graham, Pastor Greg Laurie and Pastor Jentezen Franklin will participate in prayer, scripture, service and communion.

China had previously denied any involvement in these attacks, but the Wall Street Journal now reports Beijing officials admitted involvement in an “indirect and somewhat ambiguous” way, interpreted by US officials as a “warning to the U.S. about Taiwan.”

News about increasing reciprocal tariffs between the two nations is pretty unavoidable, but the trade war is not the only stage for offensives, with US officials reportedly considering pursuing cyber strikes against China and security experts warning that China is poised to retaliate against tariffs with a “Typhoon” attack – referring to hacking groups Salt and Volt Typhoon.
Previously, the US state department had opposed Taiwanese independence, but under Trump this seems to be much more uncertain, and escalating tensions between China and the US could lead to cyber offensives on both sides.
Taiwan has a strong economy, and crucially, is home to manufacturers of semiconductors – computer chips which are essential to almost all modern technology, and are used in satellite systems, phones, laptops, and AI.
Podcaster and academic Scott Galloway stopped by The View this morning to share his unfiltered thoughts about President Donald Trump — and they weren’t pretty. Galloway joined the Hot Topics table to discuss President Trump’s “stupid” tariff plan after the POTUS ramped up his trade war with China.
Galloway was firm but animated as he detailed to the ladies of the Hot Topics table how Trump’s decisions have already harmed the economy and the nation, and how we will likely feel the ripple effects for a while.
When asked by Whoopi Goldberg this morning, “What is going on?!” he told The View, “It would be hard to think of a more elegant way to reduce prosperity this fast.”
He warned, “If these tariffs hold, your iPhone is going to go from $1,000 bucks to $2,300,” explaining that it would cost $3,500 to make an iPhone in America instead of China. He also noted that the tariffs could mean “the entire world re-routing their supply chain around brand America, which quite frankly, right now is toxic uncertainty, so they can bypass a series of unpredictable, epileptic, sclerotic decisions.”
Globalism and Reign of Jezebel.
In an especially damning line, Galloway declared, “We finally need to acknowledge, we have someone at the wheel of the global economy that is blackout drunk right now.”
Ironically, as Ana Navarro pointed out, Trump does not drink. Still, that didn’t stop Galloway from continuing to rag on the president and his plans for the U.S. economy.
When Alyssa Farah Griffin mentioned that Trump was planning to bring manufacturing back to the U.S. and ease the nation’s reliance on China, Galloway said most Americans want “high-paying jobs,” which are not manufacturing jobs.

He went on to lampoon Trump’s praise of the “great era of the late 19th century,” telling the audience, “Guess what? When we didn’t have indoor plumbing? When we had child labor? I’ll take Netflix and Novocaine.”
Galloway said Trump’s plan to “take us back to the past” makes “absolutely no sense whatsoever,” and when asked by Navarro what America’s reputation around the world is now, he said a key part of the American brand — rule of law — has “gone out the window,” along with the principle of “consistency,” citing Trump’s “war” against Canada.

A stunning example of this phenomenon in 2024 was a stone pyramid in Mexico succumbing to an increasingly chaotic global climate.
On the night of July 29, the 15-meter-high (roughly 50-foot-high) square monument located in the state of Michoacán suddenly slumped under the pressure of incessant rain, its south wall crumbling into a pile of rubble.
The pyramid was once one of the best-preserved monuments of the Michoacán Kingdom civilization. It is located at Ihuatzio, a remarkably preserved archaeological site that contains one other pyramid, a tower or fortress, and some tombs.

It was first occupied 1,100 years ago by indigenous Nahuatl-speaking groups. Later, it became the headquarters of the P’urhépechas people, the only empire the Aztecs couldn’t conquer. The culture still thrives to this day.
Only one of the pyramids at the site was damaged, but personnel from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) said that at least six of its ‘stepped bodies’ are in disrepair, including the outer wall, and the core and retaining wall.
They blamed extreme weather preceding the event.

In July, the peak of the Northern Hemisphere summer, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms battered much of Mexico. This came after the worst drought in the nation in 30 years, when rain became so scarce, several lakes dried up completely.
“The high temperatures, previously recorded in the area, and the consequent drought caused cracks that favored the filtration of water into the interior of the pre-Hispanic building,” said an INAH statement.
From there, collapse became all but inevitable. Officials are now focused on repairing the structure of the building “in favor of the cultural heritage of Mexicans.”
It’s the job of archaeologists to study human behavior in times gone by, but inevitably, their work is also impacted by current human activities.
Extreme weather and rising seas, driven by human-caused climate change, are proving to be a serious nuisance for important sites of bygone cultures.
Recently, archaeologists found that ancient cave paintings in oceania are deteriorating with accelerating climate changes.
And just this year, a study on cultural heritage building materials in Europe and Mexico found when precipitation increases substantially, it puts these buildings at risk of damage.

According to Tariakuiri Alvarez, who identifies as a living member of the P’urhépecha tribe, his ancestors would have interpreted the crumbling of the pyramid at Ihuatzio as a “bad omen”.
In a Facebook post Alvarez said that before the arrival of foreign conquerors in Mexico, something similar happened, and it was because the gods were “displeased”.
Just days before the pyramid in Mexico tumbled down, Utah’s iconic ‘Double Arch’ also caved in, probably due to changing water levels and erosion.
Heritage sites like these are priceless places that humans wish to preserve for future generations. Watching them collapse from a climate that has been drastically altered by our own behavior is displeasing to watch, and not just for immortals.

The Israeli military is extending its ground operations deep into Gaza, creating a large buffer zone between the Strip and Israeli territory and pushing hundreds of thousands of civilians into an ever-smaller area on the Mediterranean coast.
By CNN’s tally, the Israel Defense Forces has issued 20 evacuation orders since March 18, encompassing large parts of Gaza, including all of Rafah in the south.
In all, according to the United Nations, some 400,000 people have been told to move over the past three weeks, as the Israeli military intensifies efforts to force Hamas to free Israeli hostages. In the process much of Gaza has become uninhabitable or out of bounds.
“As the controversy extends into new fields, and the minds of the people are called to God’s downtrodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light, lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions. The streets of Gaza City were crammed with waves of fleeing civilians Friday, carrying what they could as they left other parts of central and northern Gaza.
One displaced man, Raed Radwan, watched as hundreds more people entered the neighborhood of Sheikh Radwan, describing it as “completely filled with tents and displaced families.”
“I see tents and people lining both sides of the road in heartbreaking conditions. Bulldozers are clearing the rubble of bombed homes to make space for more tents,” he told CNN.

Hatem Abdulsalam, also in Gaza City, told CNN that he could not “describe what we’re suffering due to garbage, flies, mosquitoes and strange insects, they are everywhere due to the waste piling up in the streets.”
“You see tents for the displaced everywhere, even among piles of garbage, because of the lack of space.”
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Friday that more than two-thirds of Gaza is now either under active displacement orders or designated as “no-go” zones – areas where humanitarian teams are required to coordinate their movements with Israeli authorities.

The Israeli strategy, set out by Defense Minister Israel Katz, is to empty large parts of Gaza and treat anyone staying behind as a combatant. Israeli officials have spoken of ratcheting up the pressure on Hamas to force it to make concessions on the release of the remaining hostages.

The Morag Corridor refers to the dismantled Jewish settlement of Morag in southern Gaza that once existed between Khan Younis and Rafah. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Friday that with the occupation of the corridor, “the encirclement of Rafah has been completed.”

A source familiar with the matter told CNN that Israel is planning to hold a significant portion of Gaza for an “indefinite” period of time.
Still, after 18 months of war, Israel is still facing a dogged adversary.
In August last year, Israel declared that Hamas’ Rafah Brigade had been defeated as it established control over the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egypt-Gaza border. But earlier this week, the new IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, told Israeli troops in Gaza, “I expect you to defeat Hamas’ Rafah Brigade and to achieve victory wherever you operate.”
And on Saturday, three rockets were fired from southern Gaza towards Israel, despite the IDF’s control over much of the area.
Israel’s strategy may have another purpose; to make life so unbearable for Gazans crammed into an ever-smaller pocket of territory without proper shelter that they begin to head for the exit.

Katz suggested as much when he said: “We are working to advance the plan for the voluntary migration of Gaza’s residents, in accordance with the vision of the US President,” referring to Donald Trump’s controversial plan to relocate Palestinians in Gaza and redevelop the territory.

At the White House last Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel was “enabling the people of Gaza to freely make a choice to go wherever they want.”
Trump had “put forward a vision, a bold vision, which we discussed as well, including the countries that might be amenable and are amenable to accepting Palestinians,” Netanyahu said.
Satan says,… “I will so control the minds under my power that God’s Sabbath will be a special object of contempt. A sign? I will make the observance of the seventh day a sign of disloyalty to the authorities of earth. Human laws will be made so stringent that men and women will not dare to observe the seventh-day Sabbath. But at least in public, Trump showed little enthusiasm for following through on that vision.
For civilians, the unrelenting misery of the last 18 months has just got a lot worse – especially as no aid has entered Gaza for six weeks. The United Nations says it has storage and distribution sites within the displacement zones.
“Overcrowded shelters are in terrible condition, service providers are struggling to operate, and resources are being depleted,”OCHA said on Friday.
“Everything is running extremely low: Bakeries have shut down, life-saving medicines have run out, and water production has been drastically reduced,” the agency said.
Famine of the word of God
It added that many of its efforts to distribute what aid is left within Gaza are blocked by Israeli authorities.
Gaza’s health ministry says that 37% of essential medicines are now completely out of stock, as are more than 50% of cancer drugs.
The United Nations and several NGOs, as well as civilians in Gaza who have spoken with CNN, say hunger is spreading.
Israel implemented the blockade in March to pressure Hamas into accepting new terms for an extension of a ceasefire agreement which had been in place since January. But there is no sign of a new ceasefire being agreed.
CNN has spoken with just a few of the tens of thousands on the move. They are exhausted and disoriented, confused as to whether to obey evacuation orders or hunker down.

Thirty-year-old Faisal Jamal Faisal from Al-Shujaiya in central Gaza arrived in Gaza City with scant possessions.
Speaking as drones buzzed overhead, Faisal said he had stayed at home despite one order to leave. Then an adjacent building had been struck and many people killed, and yet another evacuation order was issued. So he left.
Eight members enter the ark
Surrounded by eight members of his family, five of them children, Faisal said: “We don’t know where we are going, wherever our feet take us. We have left everything behind us.”

The UN Human Rights Office says Israeli strikes have reduced the shelter available, calculating that in the three weeks since March 18, “there were some 224 incidents of Israeli strikes on residential buildings and tents for internally displaced people.”
“In some 36 strikes about which the UN Human Rights Office corroborated information, the fatalities recorded so far were only women and children,” the office said.
CNN has reached out to the Israeli military for a response to the claim.
Israel has insisted that its strikes are precisely targeted, and care is taken to warn civilians of impending military operations.
That’s of little comfort to 71-year old Abu Mohammad, who suffers from glaucoma and diabetes and is now in Gaza City with nowhere to go.
Visibly distressed and struggling to move, he told CNN on Friday: “Maybe this is the twentieth time we have been displaced. Life has no meaning or future, even the past has been taken from us.”

India and the U.S. have come to the table to discuss the trade deal amid the ongoing tariff war, Reuters reported on Apr. 11.
The publication cited an Indian official who said the two countries have finalized “terms of reference” over the first segment of a bilateral trade deal. A “win-win shape and form” to the deal is possible within the next 90 days.

Military chiefs at Nato have been warned of global internet blackouts following a string of suspected Russian attacks on subsea cables.
Telecoms companies including Vodafone, O2 owner Telefonica and Orange have written to UK, EU and Nato officials warning that a rise in sabotage incidents was putting critical services at risk.
In an open letter, they wrote: “The repercussions of damage to subsea cables extend far beyond Europe, potentially affecting global internet and power infrastructure, international communications, financial transactions and critical services worldwide.”
It comes after a spike in incidents relating to fibre optic cables on seabeds that carry huge volumes of data, voice and internet traffic between countries.

More than 500 cables carry around 95pc of all international data, while their remote location makes them difficult and costly to monitor.
At least 11 subsea cables have been damaged in the Baltic Sea since October 2023 and similar outages have been reported in the North Sea.

The incidents have fuelled fears of sabotage by hostile actors, with more than 50 Russian ships observed in areas of high cable density in the Baltic Sea. The UK is monitoring the Russian spy ship Yantar amid concerns that it is mapping critical underwater infrastructure.

But they warned that the rise of malign attacks by hostile actors meant governments needed to step up their security measures.

NEW YORK (AP) — As stocks tanked on tariff fears, Marjorie Taylor Greene showed her faith in the president not just with words but dollar bills.
The Republican congresswoman, an avid supporter of the Trump administration’s trade policies, not only bought stocks last week as others dumped them in a panic — she scooped up some of the biggest losers.
Lululemon, Dell Computer, Amazon, the parent of Restoration Hardware and a few others hit hard by Trump’s tariff threats were down 40% on average late last week when she pounced.

RH, formerly called Restoration Hardware, is Greene’s clear winner. It jumped more than a third since since Friday’s close when she bought it after a stunning collapse in price that shook even the head of the furniture retailer.

Dell has jumped 9% since Greene bought the stock last week after it had lost more than half its value.
Lawmakers from both major parties have proposed bills banning members from stock trading because of the apparent conflict of interest in owning shares of companies they can heavily influence with positions they can take in office.
But none of the clunkily named bills — The Transparent Representation Upholding Service and Trust in Congress Act, for instance — has been passed. A new bill, The End Congressional Stock Trading Act, was proposed last month.
Asked whether she made the stock purchases herself and about possible conflicts of interest, Greene said in a statement: “I have signed a fiduciary agreement to allow my financial advisor to control my investments. All of my investments are reported with full transparency.”
The MAGA supporter has been outspoken in her support of Trump’s tariffs.
“Tariffs are a powerful proven source of leverage to protect our national interests,” she posted on X earlier this year, adding “We will win this trade war.”
Investors are not completely convinced.
After surging on Wednesday when Trump called a partial halt to the import taxes, stocks were heading down again Thursday.
