Beijing has once again condemned what it says are Tokyo’s “irresponsible” methods of disposing treated wastewater from its stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean, after Japan released its third batch of radioactive wastewater on Thursday.

Japan is “blatantly and irresponsibly spreading the risk of contamination worldwide,” Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, said on Thursday at a press briefing, according to the ministry’s website.

Wang added that a recent incident in which radioactive wastewater was accidentally splashed onto workers at the plant is another example of TEPCO’s (Tokyo Electric Power Company) “problematic internal management and habit of deceiving the public.”

He added that the incident “makes people doubt once again the credibility of Japan’s purportedly ‘safe and transparent’ discharge plan.”

From late August, Japan began gradually releasing the equivalent of 540 Olympic-sized swimming pools of wastewater from the disabled nuclear facility in Japan’s east. The radioactive water had been used to cool reactors that went into meltdown following the deadly 2011 earthquakes and ensuing tsunami.

A third discharge began on Thursday and is expected to take 17 days to compete.

The disposal methods have drawn stern condemnation from some members of the international community, with China and, later, Russia banning all imports of seafood from the region, arguing that Tokyo is damaging the environment.

However, Japan argues that the wastewater being released into the ocean poses no danger to the public and that, in its disposal, which is taking place over decades, it will be heavily diluted with seawater.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is overseeing the wastewater disposal, sided with Japan in September, saying that it will be able to “provide assurances to people around the world that the discharge will cause no harm.”

Nonetheless, Wang added on Thursday that Tokyo must “take seriously the widespread international concerns, engage in thorough consultations with other stakeholders, especially its neighbors, and dispose of the nuclear-contaminated water in a responsible way.”

The diplomatic spat has led to concerns for the future of seafood imports into China, which is Japan’s biggest trading partner. It has also particularly affected scallop fishermen in the Hokkaido region 500 kilometers (300 miles) north of the Fukushima plant, who used Chinese factories to process the mollusks.

Rarely seen predator spotted tearing up Texas beach, photos show. ‘Look at it dig!’

Mitchell Willetts

Thu, August 17, 2023 at 11:56 PM GMT+3·3 min read

A Texas man recently spotted one of the state’s most elusive creatures scampering around on a beach, soaking wet and covered in sand, photos show.

Tom Howe, a 67-year-old Padre Island resident, was looking for a spot to go fishing when his car battery died near the beach, he told McClatchy News. But thanks to that unlucky break, he spotted something furry and four-legged moving in the surf.

“All of the sudden I see something on the beach,” Howe said. “At first I thought it was a young coyote pup … but I got closer and thought it must be a raccoon.”

After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
Daniel:7:7-8

“Wait, that’s a badger,” he said. “Look at it dig!”

Padre Island resident Tom Howe spotted the animal while searching for a fishing spot.
Padre Island resident Tom Howe spotted the animal while searching for a fishing spot.
They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth; Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places. Arise, O LORD, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:
Psalm:17:11-13

Howe grabbed a camera from his vehicle and started snapping photos, capturing the badger as it ran into the waves and dug holes in the sand. Periodically, the animal paused its frantic activity, sniffed at the air, then plunged its sharp claws into the sand again, rooting out crabs and whatever other morsels might be hidden.

“Very few people have seen a badger out here. My neighbor two doors down, he practically lives on the beach … he’s only seen one,” he said.

Howe shared photos of the “once in a lifetime” sighting on his Facebook page and in a private wildlife group.

“OMG, I had no idea badgers lived that far south. This is amazing!” one commenter wrote in the private group post.

“Who would expect to see a badger at the beach!!” wrote another.

The badger seemed to be hunting for crabs and other small prey.
The badger seemed to be hunting for crabs and other small prey.

Some were even worried for the badger’s health.

“I hope you saw him make a catch and eat it,” a comment read. “He looks sad and scrawny.”

Howe thinks the badger is healthy, but being drenched in seawater is not the most flattering look.

While badgers live throughout much of the state, they are most prevalent in West Texas and “seem to prefer large tracts of open, uncultivated ground,” according to the state Parks and Wildlife Department. They’re tough animals with few predators.

Similar in size to a medium-size dog, badgers are powerfully built, with a “reputation for ferociousness when attacked,” McClatchy News reported.

Howe was roughly 50 yards away from the badger, and he had no interest in getting closer, he said.

“They avoid people with a passion and they’re mean,” he said. “They’re kind of aggressive like a wolverine.”

It’s uncommon to see a badger out in nature, even more so to spot one on the beach, and during daytime, Howe said.

“This was unusual behavior because it was about 11 o’clock in the morning,” he said.

Badgers are typically nocturnal animals, according to the National Park Service. However, “in remote places … they can occasionally be observed during the day,” NPS said.

The stretch of beach the badger was on could fit that bill, according to Howe. Few people were around, and the area is fairly rugged.

“You don’t want to come down here unless you’ve got four-wheel drive,” Howe said.

But Howe thinks there may be a different reason the badger had a beach day.

“There’s been such a drought that the fresh water ponds behind the dunes are all drying up, which means food becomes a little more scarce,” he said. “So its behavior is changing, it’s adapting to the environmental changes going on right now.”

Data shows that even Padre Island hasn’t been spared from the drought plaguing Texas.

Howe and his neighbors are praying that changes soon, he said.

Howe watched the badger continue its pattern of swimming and digging for 30 minutes before he moved on. He’s not sure what kept drawing it back to the water.

“I don’t know if it was bathing or cooling itself off from the heat,” he said.

If others are fortunate enough to come across the badger, Howe hopes they’ll keep their distance as he did.

“The badger is a wild animal,” he said. “Give it its space.”

Padre Island is roughly 30 miles southeast of Corpus Christi.

Nine-banded armadillos can carry the bacteria that cause leprosy, but researchers still aren’t sure whether they’re helping drive the increased local spread of the disease in Florida.

Doctors in Florida are sounding caution about one of the world’s oldest known ailments, leprosy. In a recent report, they detail a local case of the bacterial disease with no recent travel history or other clear risk factors. The case and others suggest that leprosy is spreading routinely in Central Florida and has become endemic in the area, the authors say, but there’s no clear answer yet as to how and why.

I gathered up my writings, and we started on our journey. On the way we held two meetings in Orange and had evidence that the church was profited and encouraged. We were ourselves refreshed by the Spirit of the Lord. That night I dreamed that I was in Battle Creek looking out from the side glass at the door and saw a company marching up to the house, two and two. They looked stern and determined. I knew them well and turned to open the parlor door to receive them, but thought I would look again. The scene was changed. The company now presented the appearance of a Catholic procession. One bore in his hand a cross, another a reed. And as they approached, the one carrying a reed made a circle around the house, saying three times: “This house is proscribed. The goods must be confiscated. They have spoken against our holy order.” Terror seized me, and I ran through the house, out of the north door, and found myself in the midst of a company, some of whom I knew, but I dared not speak a word to them for fear of being betrayed. I tried to seek a retired spot where I might weep and pray without meeting eager, inquisitive eyes wherever I turned. I repeated frequently: “If I could only understand this! If they will tell me what I have said or what I have done!”
I wept and prayed much as I saw our goods confiscated. I tried to read sympathy or pity for me in the looks of those around me, and marked the countenances of several whom I thought would speak to me and comfort me if they did not fear that they would be observed by others. I made one attempt to escape from the crowd, but seeing that I was watched, I concealed my intentions. I commenced weeping aloud, and saying: “If they would only tell me what I have done or what I have said!” My husband, who was sleeping in a bed in the same room, heard me weeping aloud and awoke me. My pillow was wet with tears, and a sad depression of spirits was upon me. 1T 577.2 – 1T 578.1

Testimonies For The Church Vol1 by Ellen G White

The report was published in the August issue of Emerging Infectious Diseases, a journal run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the paper, the case involves a 54-year-old man who resides in Central Florida. Sometime last year, the man visited a dermatology clinic for help with a painful rash that had started in his legs and arms but eventually spread to his trunk and face. Testing soon confirmed that the man had contracted leprosy, a chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae bacteria (it’s also a relative of the bacteria behind tuberculosis)

Leprosy, also called Hansen’s disease, has been known about since biblical times. Much like viruses, leprosy bacteria invade and hijack our cells to make more of themselves. It can take years for symptoms to appear following infection, which includes pale lesions and sores. If left untreated, the infection can gradually destroy nerve and eye cells as well, causing problems like blindness and permanently disfigured limbs.

The disease is no longer the global scourge it once was, thanks to the availability of antibiotics and improved sanitation. But it is an issue in some countries, with more than 200,000 cases reported annually worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the U.S., newly reported cases have continued to remain low, with most involving people who likely caught the disease somewhere else but were diagnosed here. But that’s started to change in Florida more recently.

As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel’s message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. When Sabbathkeepers are brought before the courts to answer for their faith, these apostates are the most efficient agents of Satan to misrepresent and accuse them, and by false reports and insinuations to stir up the rulers against them. The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan by Ellen G White

In this latest case, for instance, the man reported no travel history nor exposure to people who might have previously lived in endemic areas, such as migrants to the U.S. And between 2015 to 2020, the authors note, roughly a third of leprosy cases in Florida were likely also caught locally. At the same time, fewer and fewer cases have involved people born outside the U.S.

But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
Galatians:4:29

The miracle-working power manifested through spiritualism will exert its influence against those who choose to obey God rather than men. Communications from the spirits will declare that God has sent them to convince the rejecters of Sunday of their error, affirming that the laws of the land should be obeyed as the law of God. They will lament the great wickedness in the world and second the testimony of religious teachers that the degraded state of morals is caused by the desecration of Sunday. Great will be the indignation excited against all who refuse to accept their testimony. GC 590.2

The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan by Ellen G White

These trends, the authors wrote, “contribute to rising evidence that leprosy has become endemic in the southeastern United States.”

Strangely enough, given its fearsome reputation, leprosy is usually very hard to catch. Person-to-person transmission tends to require prolonged close contact with respiratory droplets, and as much as 95% of people are thought to be naturally immune to infection. More recently, some cases of leprosy in the southern U.S. have been linked to contact with nine-banded armadillos, which can carry the bacteria, suggesting that zoonotic transmission is playing a role in the increased spread of the disease.

That said, the risk of armadillo-to-human transmission of leprosy seems to be low as well. The man in this current case also didn’t report any exposure to armadillos, and many cases in the area have similarly lacked any clear explanation as to how they caught it.

The authors say that more research is needed to understand how and why leprosy has gained a foothold in Florida. They point out that their patient and many other cases have reported spending lots of time outdoors, which could suggest a possible environmental source of the bacteria. They also advise that doctors outside Florida who come across leprosy cases in their area should start to consider recent travel history to the state as a possible explanation.

Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

As for the man himself, he was given a three-drug combination of antibiotics, which is the standard treatment. Leprosy remains reliably curable, but treatment can’t reverse the permanent debilitating effects of late-stage illness, so it’s best to diagnose it as early as possible.Show all 41 comments

We have far more to fear from within than from without. The hindrances to strength and success are far greater from the church itself than from the world. Unbelievers have a right to expect that those who profess to be keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, will do more than any other class to promote and honor, by their consistent lives, by their godly example and their active influence, the cause which they represent. But how often have the professed advocates of the truth proved the greatest obstacle to its advancement! The unbelief indulged, the doubts expressed, the darkness cherished, encourage the presence of evil angels, and open the way for the accomplishment of Satan’s devices.—Selected Messages 1:122 (1887). God’s Love For Man

Do you practice religion?

Before the entrance of sin, Adam enjoyed open communion with his Maker; but since man separated himself from God by transgression, the human race has been cut off from this high privilege. By the plan of redemption, however, a way has been opened whereby the inhabitants of the earth may still have connection with heaven. God has communicated with men by His Spirit, and divine light has been imparted to the world by revelations to His chosen servants. “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:21.

During the first twenty-five hundred years of human history, there was no written revelation. Those who had been taught of God, communicated their knowledge to others, and it was handed down from father to son, through successive generations. The preparation of the written word began in the time of Moses. Inspired revelations were then embodied in an inspired book. This work continued during the long period of sixteen hundred years—from Moses, the historian of creation and the law, to John, the recorder of the most sublime truths of the gospel.
The Bible points to God as its author; yet it was written by human hands; and in the varied style of its different books it presents the characteristics of the several writers. The truths revealed are all “given by inspiration of God” (2 Timothy 3:16); yet they are expressed in the words of men. The Infinite One by His Holy Spirit has shed light into the minds and hearts of His servants. He has given dreams and visions, symbols and figures; and those to whom the truth was thus revealed have themselves embodied the thought in human language.

The Ten Commandments were spoken by God Himself, and were written by His own hand. They are of divine, and not of human composition. But the Bible, with its God-given truths expressed in the language of men, presents a union of the divine and the human. Such a union existed in the nature of Christ, who was the Son of God and the Son of man. Thus it is true of the Bible, as it was of Christ, that “the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” John 1:14.

Written in different ages, by men who differed widely in rank and occupation, and in mental and spiritual endowments, the books of the Bible present a wide contrast in style, as well as a diversity in the nature of the subjects unfolded. Different forms of expression are employed by different writers; often the same truth is more strikingly presented by one than by another. And as several writers present a subject under varied aspects and relations, there may appear, to the superficial, careless, or prejudiced reader, to be discrepancy or contradiction, where the thoughtful, reverent student, with clearer insight, discerns the underlying harmony.

As presented through different individuals, the truth is brought out in its varied aspects. One writer is more strongly impressed with one phase of the subject; he grasps those points that harmonize with his experience or with his power of perception and appreciation; another seizes upon a different phase; and each, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, presents what is most forcibly impressed upon his own mind—a different aspect of the truth in each, but a perfect harmony through all. And the truths thus revealed unite to form a perfect whole, adapted to meet the wants of men in all the circumstances and experiences of life.
God has been pleased to communicate His truth to the world by human agencies, and He Himself, by His Holy Spirit, qualified men and enabled them to do this work. He guided the mind in the selection of what to speak and what to write. The treasure was entrusted to earthen vessels, yet it is, nonetheless, from Heaven. The testimony is conveyed through the imperfect expression of human language, yet it is the testimony of God; and the obedient, believing child of God beholds in it the glory of a divine power, full of grace and truth. I

In His word, God has committed to men the knowledge necessary for salvation. The Holy Scriptures are to be accepted as an authoritative, infallible revelation of His will. They are the standard of character, the revealer of doctrines, and the test of experience. “Every scripture inspired of God is also profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction which is in righteousness; that the man of God may be complete, furnished completely unto every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16, 17, R.V.
Yet the fact that God has revealed His will to men through His word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour, to open the word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings. And since it was the Spirit of God that inspired the Bible, it is impossible that the teaching of the Spirit should ever be contrary to that of the word.

The Spirit was not given—nor can it ever be bestowed—to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures explicitly state that the word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. Says the apostle John, “Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1. And Isaiah declares, “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Isaiah 8:20.

Great reproach has been cast upon the work of the Holy Spirit by the errors of a class that, claiming its enlightenment, profess to have no further need of guidance from the word of God. They are governed by impressions which they regard as the voice of God in the soul. But the spirit that controls them is not the Spirit of God. This following of impressions, to the neglect of the Scriptures, can lead only to confusion, to deception and ruin. It serves only to further the designs of the evil one. Since the ministry of the Holy Spirit is of vital importance to the church of Christ, it is one of the devices of Satan, through the errors of extremists and fanatics, to cast contempt upon the work of the Spirit and cause the people of God to neglect this source of strength which our Lord Himself has provided.

In harmony with the word of God, His Spirit was to continue its work throughout the period of the gospel dispensation. During the ages while the Scriptures of both the Old and the New Testament were being given, the Holy Spirit did not cease to communicate light to individual minds, apart from the revelations to be embodied in the Sacred Canon. The Bible itself relates how, through the Holy Spirit, men received warning, reproof, counsel, and instruction, in matters in no way relating to the giving of the Scriptures. And mention is made of prophets in different ages, of whose utterances nothing is recorded. In like manner, after the close of the canon of the Scripture, the Holy Spirit was still to continue its work, to enlighten, warn, and comfort the children of God.
Jesus promised His disciples, “The Comforter which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” “When He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: … and He will show you things to come.” John 14:26; 16:13. Scripture plainly teaches that these promises, so far from being limited to apostolic days, extend to the church of Christ in all ages. The Saviour assures His followers, “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20. And Paul declares that the gifts and manifestations of the Spirit were set in the church “for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:12, 13.

For the believers at Ephesus the apostle prayed, “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him: the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of His calling, and … what is the exceeding greatness of His power to usward who believe.” Ephesians 1:17-19. The ministry of the divine Spirit in enlightening the understanding and opening to the mind the deep things of God’s holy word, was the blessing which Paul thus besought for the Ephesian church.

After the wonderful manifestation of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, Peter exhorted the people to repentance and baptism in the name of Christ, for the remission of their sins; and he said: “Ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” Acts 2:38, 39.

In immediate connection with the scenes of the great day of God, the Lord by the prophet Joel has promised a special manifestation of His Spirit. Joel 2:28. This prophecy received a partial fulfillment in the outpouring of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost; but it will reach its full accomplishment in the manifestation of divine grace which will attend the closing work of the gospel.

The great controversy between good and evil will increase in intensity to the very close of time. In all ages the wrath of Satan has been manifested against the church of Christ; and God has bestowed His grace and Spirit upon His people to strengthen them to stand against the power of the evil one. When the apostles of Christ were to bear His gospel to the world and to record it for all future ages, they were especially endowed with the enlightenment of the Spirit. But as the church approaches her final deliverance, Satan is to work with greater power. He comes down “having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.” Revelation 12:12. He will work “with all power and signs and lying wonders.” 2 Thessalonians 2:9. For six thousand years that mastermind that once was highest among the angels of God has been wholly bent to the work of deception and ruin. And all the depths of satanic skill and subtlety acquired, all the cruelty developed, during these struggles of the ages, will be brought to bear against God’s people in the final conflict. And in this time of peril the followers of Christ are to bear to the world the warning of the Lord’s second advent; and a people are to be prepared to stand before Him at His coming, “without spot, and blameless.” 2 Peter 3:14. At this time the special endowment of divine grace and power is not less needful to the church than in apostolic days.

Through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, the scenes of the long-continued conflict between good and evil have been opened to the writer of these pages. From time to time I have been permitted to behold the working, in different ages, of the great controversy between Christ, the Prince of life, the Author of our salvation, and Satan, the prince of evil, the author of sin, the first transgressor of God’s holy law. Satan’s enmity against Christ has been manifested against His followers. The same hatred of the principles of God’s law, the same policy of deception, by which error is made to appear as truth, by which human laws are substituted for the law of God, and men are led to worship the creature rather than the Creator, may be traced in all the history of the past. Satan’s efforts to misrepresent the character of God, to cause men to cherish a false conception of the Creator, and thus to regard Him with fear and hate rather than with love; his endeavors to set aside the divine law, leading the people to think themselves free from its requirements; and his persecution of those who dare to resist his deceptions, have been steadfastly pursued in all ages. They may be traced in the history of patriarchs, prophets, and apostles, of martyrs and reformers.

In the great final conflict, Satan will employ the same policy, manifest the same spirit, and work for the same end as in all preceding ages. That which has been, will be, except that the coming struggle will be marked with a terrible intensity such as the world has never witnessed. Satan’s deceptions will be more subtle, his assaults more determined. If it were possible, he would lead astray the elect. Mark 13:22, R.V.

As the Spirit of God has opened to my mind the great truths of His word, and the scenes of the past and the future, I have been bidden to make known to others that which has thus been revealed—to trace the history of the controversy in past ages, and especially so to present it as to shed a light on the fast-approaching struggle of the future. In pursuance of this purpose, I have endeavored to select and group together events in the history of the church in such a manner as to trace the unfolding of the great testing truths that at different periods have been given to the world, that have excited the wrath of Satan, and the enmity of a world-loving church, and that have been maintained by the witness of those who “loved not their lives unto the death.”

In these records we may see a foreshadowing of the conflict before us. Regarding them in the light of God’s word, and by the illumination of His Spirit, we may see unveiled the devices of the wicked one, and the dangers which they must shun who would be found “without fault” before the Lord at His coming.
The great events which have marked the progress of reform in past ages are matters of history, well known and universally acknowledged by the Protestant world; they are facts which none can gainsay. GC v.1 – GC xi.4
