TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan criticised Russia and China on Friday for distorting World War Two history, saying Chinese communist forces made “no substantial contribution” to fighting Japan and instead took the opportunity to expand their own forces.

Taiwan has this year sought to cast the war as a lesson to China in why aggression will end in failure, reminding the world it was not the government in Beijing that won the war.

The Chinese government at the time was the Republic of China, part of the U.S., British and Russian-led alliance, and its forces did much of the fighting against Japan, putting on pause a bitter civil war with Mao Zedong’s Communists whose military also fought the Japanese.

Speaking of the law against Sabbath breaking in the time of the ancient Israelite theocracy, Mr. Hazard says: “There was no tyranny over conscience in the case, and there is none. In things moral and social the State has right over the conscience of the minority in it, to compel it.” Has the State such right? Are the American people ready to accept such doctrine? If they are, then the scenes of the Dark Ages are ready to be repeated in this land; for no worse principle was ever cited in justification of any act of oppression or prosecution.
Think of it: “In things moral, … the State has right over the conscience of the minority in it, to compel it!” Is this the doctrine that is to be gathered from the pages of history or of revelation, or deduced from reason in the light of the nineteenth century? Is it a true saying, after all, that “might makes right”? Is the State to define morality? and not only that, but to compel the conscience of individuals in moral things, who happen to be in the minority? God himself does not undertake to compel the conscience.
The author of this proposition cites as an example under it the case of a man who has “a conscience distorted to fit stealing,” or “another” who “may fail to see the use and value of the Sabbath,” in which case, he says, the State will see it for him. But if a man should plead conscience for stealing, the State would disregard his plea not on the ground that his conscience was bad or that he was in the minority, but simply on the ground that he had violated human rights, which it is the purpose of the government to protect. The State would not make itself lord of his conscience; it would not concern itself with his conscience at all. It would simply take cognizance of the fact that the rights of some of its citizens had been violated, and as the appointed protector of those rights, its proper action in the matter would be clear, without any reference to the criminal’s plea of conscience. The republican government then fled to Taiwan in 1949 after finally being defeated by Mao, and Republic of China remains the democratic island’s official name.

Responding to comments by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Chinese President Xi Jinping that the war was won under the leadership of China’s communist party, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said it was the Republic of China government and people who fought and ultimately won.

“The Chinese communists only took the opportunity to expand and consolidate communist forces, and made no substantial contribution to the war of resistance, let alone ‘leading’ the war of resistance,” it said.

Everywhere there is a tendency to substitute the work of organizations for individual effort. Human wisdom tends to consolidation, to centralization, to the building up of great churches and institutions. Multitudes leave to institutions and organizations the work of benevolence; they excuse themselves from contact with the world, and their hearts grow cold. They become self-absorbed and unimpressible. Love for God and man dies out of the soul.
Christ commits to His followers an individual work—a work that cannot be done by proxy. Ministry to the sick and the poor, the giving of the gospel to the lost, is not to be left to committees or organized charities. Individual responsibility, individual effort, personal sacrifice, is the requirement of the gospel.
“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in,” is Christ’s command, “that My house may be filled.” He brings men into touch with those whom they seek to benefit. “Bring the poor that are cast out to thy house,” He says. “When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him.” “They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” Luke 14:23; Isaiah 58:7; Mark 16:18. Through direct contact, through personal ministry, the blessings of the gospel are to be communicated. MH 147.3 – MH 147.5

China’s Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Xi is in Moscow to attend Friday’s military parade marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe.

In a joint statement with China, Russia reaffirmed that Taiwan was an “inseparable part of the People’s Republic of China” – a position the government in Taipei strongly disputes.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry said those documents confirmed that it was the Republic of China which had sovereignty over Taiwan.

“At the time, the People’s Republic of China did not exist at all,” it said.

“Any false statements intended to distort Taiwan’s sovereign status cannot change history, nor can they shake the objective facts recognised by the international community.”

China labels Taiwan President Lai Ching-te a “separatist”. He rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims, saying only Taiwan’s people can decide their future.

Leo is now tied for the fourth most common name chosen by popes, along with Clement. Only John, Gregory and Benedict have proven more popular.

But we haven’t had a Pope Leo in more than a century.

Leo means Lion 🦁 _The Beast

The last Pope Leo was Leo XIII, who was born in French-occupied Rome in 1810. He served as pope from 1878 until his death in 1903, making his 25-year papacy the fourth longest in the church’s history.

The Roman church largely controls the secular press of the country; and the leading “Protestant” religious papers, such as the New York Evangelist, the Christian at Work, the Christian Union, and the Independent, all pay flattering tribute to the papacy. The Evangelist, of March 29, 1888, acknowledges Cardinal Gibbons as its “only cardinal;” the Independent wishes pope Leo XIII. “a long reign and godspeed in his liberalizing policy;” Christian at Work salutes him as “holy father,” and in the name of “the whole Christian world” glorifies him as “this venerable man whose loyalty to God and zeal for the welfare of humanity are as conspicuous as his freedom from many errors and bigotries of his predecessors is remarkable;” and the Christian Union, January 26, 1888, acknowledges him as “a temporal prince” and “supreme pontiff.” GC88 688.1

Their meeting was rendered in a 1514 painting by Raphael. The Renaissance work is now displayed in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, which the 133 voting cardinals – including Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Leo XIV – passed through as they proceeded into the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday for the start of the conclave.

In vision I saw two armies in terrible conflict. One army was led by banners bearing the world’s insignia; the other was led by the bloodstained banner of Prince Immanuel. Standard after standard was left to trail in the dust as company after company from the Lord’s army joined the foe and tribe after tribe from the ranks of the enemy united with the commandment-keeping people of God. An angel flying in the midst of heaven put the standard of Immanuel into many hands, while a mighty general cried out with a loud voice: “Come into line. A song of praise to God went up, and angel voices united in the song, as Christ’s soldiers planted His banner on the walls of fortresses till then held by the enemy. The Captain of our salvation was ordering the battle and sending support to His soldiers. His power was mightily displayed, encouraging them to press the battle to the gates. He taught them terrible things in righteousness as He led them on step by step, conquering and to conquer.
At last the victory was gained. The army following the banner with the inscription, “The commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus,” was gloriously triumphant. The  soldiers of Christ were close beside the gates of the city, and with joy the city received her King. The kingdom of peace and joy and everlasting righteousness was established.
Now the church is militant. Now we are confronted with a world in midnight darkness, almost wholly given over to idolatry.  8T 41.1 – 8T 42.1

Leo XIV used his first words as pope to call for peace.

The Christian Statesman is the official organ of the National Reform Association, and in an editorial, December 11, 1884, that paper said: “We cordially, gladly, recognize the fact that in the South American republics, and in France and other European countries, the Roman Catholics are the recognized advocates of national Christianity, and stand opposed to all the proposals of secularism…. whenever they are willing to co-operate in resisting the progress of political atheism, we will gladly join hands with them. In a World’s Conference for the Promotion of National Christianity—which ought to be held at no distant day—many countries could be represented only by Roman Catholics.” And in that same paper, August 31, 1881, Rev. Sylvester Scovel* said: “This common interest [“of all religious people in the Sabbath”—Sunday] ought both to strengthen our determination to work, and our readiness to co-operate in every way with our Roman Catholic fellow-citizens. We may be subjected to some rebuffs in our first proffers, and the time is not yet come when the Roman church will consent to strike hands with other churches—as such; but the time has come to make repeated advances, and gladly to accept co-operation in any form in which they may be willing to exhibit it. It is one of the necessities of the situation. The nexus between the two great divisions of Christianity on questions of moral legislation is a thing worthy the consideration of our best minds and our men of largest experience in such affairs.” In perfect accord with this is the encyclical of Pope Leo XIII., 1885, which directs that “all Catholics should do all in their power to cause the constitutions of states, and legislation, to be modeled on the principles of the true church, and all Catholic writers and journalists should never lose sight, for an instant, from the view of the above prescriptions.” Therefore as the purpose of the national reform association is identical with that of rome, it is only to be expected that they should show a readiness to “gladly join hands.” And whenever Protestantism gains control of the civil power, whether with or without the aid of Rome, that will be but to erect an image of the papacy. The name Leo derives from the Latin for “lion,” suggesting strength and courage.

When the wily prelate saw that Luther’s reasoning was unanswerable, he lost all self-control, and in a rage cried out: “Retract, or I will send you to Rome, there to appear before the judges commissioned to take cognizance of your case. I will excommunicate you and all your partisans, and all who shall at any time countenance you, and will cast them out of the church. Full power has been given me for this purpose by the holy apostolic see. Think you that your protectors will stop me? Do you imagine that the pope can fear Germany? The pope’s little finger is stronger than all Germany put together.”

In his address from the balcony, Leo XIV said the church can still hear “the weak but always courageous voice of Pope Francis,” his predecessor.

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon and Syria are cracking down on Palestinian factions that for decades have had an armed presence in both countries and which on some occasions were used to plan and launch attacks against Israel.

The crackdown comes as Syria’s new rulers under Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are pursuing officials of the former government under Bashar Assad, including those in the ousted president’s web of security agencies. Syria’s most prominent Palestinian factions were key allies of the Assad dynasty in both war and peace time and closely cooperated on security matters.

It also comes after Iran’s main regional ally, the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, was weakened after over a year of war with Israel and as Lebanon’s new government vows to monopolize all arms under the government, including Hezbollah and Palestinian factions in Lebanon.

On Wednesday, Syria’s President Ahmad al-Sharaa said his government is holding indirect talks with Israel through mediators, who he did not name. He said the aim of the indirect negotiations is to ease tensions after intense Israeli airstrikes on Syria.

A crackdown on hardline Palestinian factions, including the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which took part with Hamas in the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Gaza, is likely to be welcomed by Israel.

A Syrian government official declined to comment on the matter.

A Palestinian official who had been in Damascus for more than 40 years, and who recently left the country, said Palestinian factions in Syria were forced to hand over their weapons and the Palestinian embassy will be the only side that Syria’s new authorities will deal with. The Palestinian groups would only be limited to social and charitable activities, the official added, who spoke on condition of anonymity fearing for their safety.

“As the controversy extends into new fields, and the minds of the people are called to God’s downtrodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light, lest it should shine upon their flocks. By every means at their command they will endeavor to suppress the discussion of these vital questions. The church appeals to the strong arm of civil power, and in this work papists and Protestants unite. As the movement for Sunday enforcement becomes more bold and decided, the law will be invoked against commandment-keepers. They will be threatened with fines and imprisonment, and some will be offered positions of influence and other rewards and advantages as inducements to renounce their faith…. Conscientious obedience to the Word of God will be treated as rebellion.” RH April 27, 1911, par. 20

Palestinian factions for decades have lived in refugee camps in Lebanon and Syria and have been involved militarily both locally and regionally. They closely aligned themselves with the Assads and later with Hezbollah in Lebanon, whose powerful military arsenal grew over the past few decades. Over time, many of the leaders of groups like Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were based in those countries.

However, the regional developments of late 2024 that went against Iran’s favor in the Levant began to take shape in recent weeks among the Palestinian factions in Lebanon and Syria.

The Syrian state will protect citizens whether they are Palestinians or Syrians,” said Syrian political analyst Ahmad al-Hamada, whose view points reflect those of the government. “It is not allowed for Palestinian factions that were arms for Iran and the Assad regime to keep their weapons.”

Another Palestinian official with one of the factions that had been based in Syria said the developments caught them by surprise, and that regardless of who runs the country they are keen to have good relations with Syria’s new rulers and maintain the country’s stability.

Northern Smoking Pot : Hamas leadership operating behind veil of secrecy

The government in Lebanon, which is trying to expand its army’s influence in the south near Israel, has also been reclaiming dozens of informal border crossings with Syria, which were key arteries for Iran and its allies to transport weapons and fighters over the years. Many of those crossings were held by PFLP-GC militants who have given some of those positions up to the Lebanese army after Assad’s downfall.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who Palestinian factions in Syria oppose, visited Damascus last month for the first time in more than a decade and he is scheduled to visit Lebanon on May 21.

‘Unprecedented times’

After Israel intensified its airstrikes on Lebanon in response to Hamas allegedly firing rockets from southern Lebanon in late March, the Lebanese government for the first time called out the Palestinian group and arrested nearly 10 suspects involved in the operation. Hamas was pressured by the military to turn in three of their militants from different refugee camps.

Ahmad Abdul-Hadi, a Hamas representative in Lebanon, was also summoned by the head of one of the country’s top security agencies over the incident and was formally told that Hamas should stop its military activities.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun, who is backed by the United States and Arab countries rather than Hezbollah and Iran, has said armed factions should not be allowed to “shake up national security and stability.” His statement has set a new tone after decades of tolerating the presence of armed Palestinian groups in refugee camps which have led to armed conflict in the crowded ghettos.

“I think we’re in unprecedented times, politically speaking,” said Mohanad Hage Ali, a senior fellow at the Malcolm H. Kerr Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut. “The (Lebanese) army is acting out of a political will, with its former chief now the president. There is a strong political thrust behind the army.”

A Lebanese government official familiar with the initiative said that Hamas was told to hand over wanted militants and end all its military activity in the country. He added that there is also a plan to gradually give up Hamas’ weapons, which coincides with the visit to Lebanon of Abbas, leader of the rival Fatah group.

A Florida man was gored by a bison after coming too close to the animal in Yellowstone National Park, officials said Wednesday.

The man, 47, sustained minor injuries, the National Park Service said in a news release, and was treated by emergency personnel. The NPS did not say if the man, from Cape Coral, Florida, remained in the park after the incident.

The American bison is the largest animal in North America and can weigh as much as 2,000 pounds and reach heights of six feet, according to the U.S. Department of the Interior. They can run three times faster than humans, the NPS said, and are unpredictable, territorial animals. They can also jump high fences and are strong swimmers, the Department of the Interior said, but have poor vision and rely on their senses of smell and hearing.

Bison “have injured more people in Yellowstone than any other animal,” the NPS said. This is the first injury caused by a bison in Yellowstone in 2025, the park said. Last June, an 83-year-old woman was treated for serious injuries after being gored by a bison near Yellowstone Lake. The animal “lifted her about a foot off the ground with its horns,” the park said at the time. Also in 2024, an Idaho man allegedly kicked a bison and was attacked by the animal. He was charged with being under the influence of alcohol, disorderly conduct, approaching wildlife and disturbing wildlife, the park said.

To stay safe, the NPS recommends visitors stay at least 25 yards from all large animals, including bison, elk, deer, moose and coyotes. Park visitors should keep 100 yards between themselves and bears and wolves, the NPS said. If an animal approaches a visitor, the person should move back to maintain distance, the NPS said.

As the Protestant churches reject the clear, Scriptural arguments in defense of God’s law, they will long to silence those whose faith they cannot overthrow by the Bible. Though they blind their own eyes to the fact, they are now adopting a course which will lead to the persecution of those who conscientiously refuse to do what the rest of the Christian world are doing, and acknowledge the claims of the papal sabbath.
The dignitaries of church and state will unite to bribe, persuade, or compel all classes to honor the Sunday. The lack of divine authority will be supplied by oppressive enactments. Political corruption is destroying love of justice and regard for truth; and even in free America, rulers and legislators, in order to secure public favor, will yield to the popular demand for a law enforcing Sunday observance. Liberty of conscience, which has cost so great a sacrifice, will no longer be respected. In the soon-coming conflict we shall see exemplified the prophet’s words: “The dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Revelation 12:17. They wanted to give these tourists “the Boot.”

Thousands of tourists inundated a picturesque Italian town this past weekend, creating a “gridlock” that obstructed traffic and forced other sightseers to wait “hours” to get in, as seen in dramatic footage circulating on X.

The shocking scenes were recorded at Sirmione, a village of just over 8,000 residents that’s situated on the scenic shores of Lake Garda.

The town has become a popular sightseeing destination due to its Roman ruins, thermal baths and Scaligero Castle, a majestic 13th-century fortification seemingly ripped straight out of a fairytale, the Times Of London reported.

Unfortunately, this tranquil oasis turned into a mosh pit after a whopping 75,000 visitors descended on the waterfront hub over the May Day holiday weekend to visit the fortress, the Sun reported.

Alarming clips show throngs of travelers lining up at the gates and piling into Sirmione’s narrow passageways like the start of the Superbowl.

CAIRO/GAZA (Reuters) – Dozens of community kitchens in Gaza shut their doors on Thursday due to a lack of supplies, closing off a lifeline used by hundreds of thousands of people in a further blow to efforts to combat growing hunger in the enclave.

The move followed hours after the U.S.-based World Central Kitchen (WCK) charity announced that it had run out of the ingredients necessary to provide much-needed free meals and had been prevented by Israel from bringing in aid.

Popery had become the world’s despot. Kings and emperors bowed to the decrees of the Roman pontiff. The destinies of men, both for time and for eternity, seemed under his control. For hundreds of years the doctrines of Rome had been extensively and implicitly received, its rites reverently performed, its festivals generally observed. Its clergy were honored and liberally sustained. Never since has the Roman Church attained to greater dignity, magnificence, or power.
But “the noon of the papacy was the midnight of the world.”—J. A. Wylie, The History of Protestantism, b. 1, ch. 4. The Holy Scriptures were almost unknown, not only to the people, but to the priests. Like the Pharisees of old, the papal leaders hated the light which would reveal their sins. Men shrank from no crime by which they could gain wealth or position. The palaces of popes and prelates were scenes of the vilest debauchery. Amjad al-Shawa, director of the Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network (PNGO) in Gaza, told Reuters that most of the enclave’s 170 community kitchens had shut down after running out of stock due to Israel’s continued blockade on Gaza.

Shawa said the decision by the WCK, announced late on Wednesday, and the closure of community kitchens on Thursday would cause a drop of between 400,000 to 500,000 free meals per day for the 2.3 million population.

“Everyone in Gaza today is hungry. The world must act now to save the people here,” said Shawa, speaking to Reuters by phone from Gaza.

“The remaining kitchens will be closing soon. The hunger catastrophe is beyond words. People are losing their lone source of food,” Shawa added.

Satan well knew that the Holy Scriptures would enable men to discern his deceptions and withstand his power. It was by the word that even the Saviour of the world had resisted his attacks. At every assault, Christ presented the shield of eternal truth, saying, “It is written.” To every suggestion of the adversary, He opposed the wisdom and power of the word. PARIS (AP) — Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said Wednesday that his country is holding indirect talks with Israel to prevent recent hostilities from getting out of control. He spoke on his first visit to Europe since taking office in January, and as he seeks to broaden ties to Western countries.

After a long and severe conflict, the faithful few decided to dissolve all union with the apostate church if she still refused to free herself from falsehood and idolatry. They saw that separation was an absolute necessity if they would obey the word of God. They dared not tolerate errors fatal to their own souls, and set an example which would imperil the faith of their children and children’s children. To secure peace and unity they were ready to make any concession consistent with fidelity to God; but they felt that even peace would be too dearly purchased at the sacrifice of principle. If unity could be secured only by the compromise of truth and righteousness, then let there be difference, and even war. GC 45.3

Al-Sharaa met earlier Wednesday with French President Emmanuel Macron, who said he would push the EU and U.S. to lift sanctions on Syria to boost its economy. Macron also called for continued U.S. and international military presence in Syria to fight terrorist groups threatening security in the Mideast and Europe.

The Syrian leader’s visit to Paris comes a week after clashes between forces loyal to al-Sharaa and fighters from the minority Druze sect that left nearly 100 people dead. This followed earlier violence in Syria’s coastal region between Sunni gunmen and members of the minority Alawite sect, which left more than 1,000 people dead, many of them Alawite civilians killed in revenge attacks.

Religious minorities in Syria, including Alawites, Christians and Druze, fear persecution under the predominantly Sunni Muslim-led government. Al-Sharaa has repeatedly pledged that all Syrians will be treated equally regardless of religion or ethnicity.

When the leading churches of the United States, uniting upon such points of doctrine as are held by them in common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and to sustain their institutions, then Protestant America will have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy, and the infliction of civil penalties upon dissenters will inevitably result. The 14-year conflict has killed nearly half a million people and displaced millions. Syria’s infrastructure lies in ruins, and international sanctions remain a major barrier to reconstruction.

The visit to Paris is being closely watched as a potential test of Europe’s willingness to engage with Syria’s new leadership.

The European Union has begun easing sanctions, suspending measures targeting Syria’s oil, gas and electricity sectors, as well as transport, including aviation, and banking restrictions. The EU said that it would monitor developments in Syria to see whether other economic sanctions could be lifted, but its 27 member states are divided on whether to go further.

In late April, the British government announced it was lifting sanctions on a dozen Syrian entities, including government departments and state-run media outlets.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to formally recognize the new Syrian government led by al-Sharaa, and HTS remains a U.S.-designated terrorist organization. Sanctions imposed on Damascus under Assad remain in place. However, Washington eased some restrictions in January when the U.S. Treasury issued a general license, valid for six months, authorizing certain transactions with the Syrian government, including some energy sales and incidental transfers.

One of France’s concerns after the collapse of the Assad regime is the status of radicalized French nationals who left France to join jihadist groups in Syria.

One is the fugitive widow of an Islamic State killer who plotted deadly attacks against the Charlie Hebdo satirical newspaper and a kosher market in Paris in 2015.

Around 120 French nationals who left to join groups in Syria are also being held in Kurdish-run camps and prisons, France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor says. In all, about 1,500 French nationals left for Syria to join extremist groups, and the whereabouts of about 300 others are unknown, he has said.

CAN WE TRUST BIBLE PROPHECY?

SO FAR, BIBLE PROPHECY HAS ACCURATELY PREDICTED WORLD HISTORY – WHAT DOES IT SAY ABOUT THE FUTURE?
Can we trust Bible prophecy? The Bible itself requires that if a prophet claims divine inspiration, all his or her predictions must come true in every detail, unless they are conditional prophecies like Jonah’s. If an unconditional prophecies fails, the prophet is discredited.

Jesus reinforced this principle when He told His disciples, “Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he” (John 13:19). Throughout history, Bible prophets have passed this test.

The Apostle Peter assures us that through prophecy we may have a stronger foundation for our faith than even the disciples own experience with Jesus. Through the “more sure word of prophecy” (2 Peter 1:16-21), prophets speak as moved by God through the Holy Spirit and are in harmony with all other aspects of His Word, including His law. (See Isaiah 8:20.)

Not all Bible prophecies, however, have yet been fulfilled. As we study the end-time prophecies of Daniel and John, we must honestly ask, Have their previous prophecies come true in every detail? If so, we would be wise to seriously study their future prophecies.

Let us begin our study of prophecy with the book of Daniel. We will confine our study to two chapters: Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of Daniel 2 and the enlargement of that dream given to Daniel in chapter 7. These chapters give a brief overview of world history from the past reign of Babylon to the future everlasting reign of Christ’s kingdom.

NEBUCHADNEZZAR’S DREAM
First, God gave Nebuchadnezzar a dream of a great image with a head of gold, a chest and arms of silver, a belly and thighs of brass, and legs of iron with feet partly of iron and partly of clay. Then a stone cut out without human hands came down from heaven and destroyed the whole image. (See Daniel 2:31-35.)

Next, God removed the dream from Nebuchadnezzar so that his wise men could not give it a false interpretation. Then God gave the same dream along with its interpretation to Daniel, a Hebrew captive who, while serving the king as a wise man, honored Jehovah. The dream was an outline of world empires from Babylon to Christ’s second coming.

Babylon: The head of gold represented the king or kingdom of Babylon. (See Daniel 2:36-38.)

MEDO-PERSIA: The Babylonians were defeated in 539 B.C. by Cyrus, the Medo-Persian general. Daniel 5:22-31 tells the story of Babylon’s capture. The Medo-Persians were symbolized by the silver breast and arms.

Greece: Twice in the book of Daniel we are told that the Medes and Perians would be defeated by the Greeks. (See Daniel 8:4-7, 20-21; 11:1-3.) The Greeks defeated the Medes and Persians in 331 B.C., and are represented by the belly and thighs of brass.

ROME: The iron legs represent the fourth world empire. (See Daniel 2:40.) History records that the Greeks were defeated in 168 B.C. by the Romans. Rome is well described here as an empire that crushes like iron.

No new earthly superpower emerged to defeat and conquer Rome. Instead, around A.D. 476, Rome was overrun by ten barbaric tribes which eventually became the nations of Western Europe. These ten tribes are aptly depicted by toes of iron and clay. (See Daniel 2:41-43.) There have been many attempts to bring these tribes into a singular empire, but the prophecy was, “they shall not cleave one to another” (Daniel 2:43). Napolean, Hitler, and others sought to unite Europe through force. Others have tried through political alliances and royal intermarriage – the mingling of the “seed of men.” Unity of sorts may have existed for a few brief years, yet no lasting unity has ever been achieved.

CHRIST’S KINGDOM: In the end, the stone cut without hands, representing Christ’s kingdoms. (See Daniel 2:34-35, 44-45.) Daniel chapter 2 teaches us that man will never build an everlasting empire. Only God’s kingdom will reign forever and ever.

DANIEL’S SECOND DREAM
Many years later, Daniel was given additional information about these four kingdoms, especially details leading to Earth’s closing events. Daniel sees “four great beast” or “kings” with kingdoms come “up from the sea, diverse one from another” (Daniel 7:3, 17).

BABYLON: The first beast resembled a lion with the wings of an eagle. (See Daniel 7:4). The lion with eagle’s wings was a common symbol used by ancient Babylon. The Bible elsewhere describes Babylon as a lion. (See Jeremiah 50:17.)

MEDO-PERSIA: The second beast resembled a bear raised up on one side with three ribs between his teeth. (See Daniel 7:5.) The Medes and the Persians defeated the Babylonians in 539 B.C. The bear was raised on one side because the Persians were dominant. Between the years of 547 – 545 B.C., Egypt, Lydia, and Babylon were conquered, symbolized by the three ribs betwee the bear’s teeth.

GREECE: The third beast resembled a leopard with four wings and four heads. In 331 B.C. the 31-year-old Alexander the Great conquered the world with amazing speed. When he died suddenly, the empire was divided among his four generals: Egypt to Ptolemy; Syria to Seleucus; Asia Minor to Cassander; and Macedonia to Lysimachus.

ROME: The ferocious beast with ten horns represents the fourth kingdoms to rule the world. (see Daniel 7:23-25.) Rome defeated the Greeks in 168 B.C., becoming the fourth world empire. Ten kingdoms or tribes overran the Western Roman Empire contributing to its collapse in A.D. 476: Anglo-Saxons (English), Alemanni (German), Franks (French), Burgundians (Swiss), Suevi (Portuguese), Visigoths (Spanish), Vandals (North Africans), Lombardi, Ostrogoths, and the Heruli (each from a different part of Italy).

THE LITTLE HORN POWER: Another king emerges from among the first ten kings. (See Daniel 7:8, 20-26.) In its rise it plucks up – or destroys – three of the first ten kingdoms. (See Daniel 7:8, 23.) Who is this king with a “look more stout than his fellows?”

THE LITTLE HORN POWER
The following ten identifying marks of the little horn power accurately describe it as the next extension of the Roman Empire – Papal Rome:

1. It was a kingdom as the other horns are kingdoms. “And another [horn] shall arise…” (Daniel 7:24). The Papacy was both a religious and political power.
   “Lomg ages ago, when Rome through the neglect of the Western emperors was left to the mercy of the barbarous hordes, the Romans turned to one figure for aid and protection, and asked him to rule them; and thus,…command the temporal sovereignty of the popes. And meekly stepping to the throne of caesar, the vicar of Christ took up the scepter to which the emperors and kings of Europe were to bow in reverence through so many ages.” (Catholic Quarterly Review, April 1911.)
2. It would emerge from the Roman Empire with the other ten kingdoms: “there came up among them another little horn” (Daniel 7:8). “Out of the ruins of political Rome, arose the great moral empire in the ‘giant form’ of the Roman Church.” (The Rise of the Medieval Church, 1909, p. 150.)
3. It would arise after the ten kings had risen to power. “And another shall rise after them” (Dainel 7:24). The ten divisions of Rome were completed in A.D. 476. Yet the papacy did not emerge with power in the Western Roman Empire until Emperor Justinian, isolated in the East in Constantinople, needed the pope’s influence and support in the West. The year was 538 and the pope was Vigilius. “From this time on the popes, more and more involved in worldly affairs, no longer belong solely to the Church; They are men of the state, and then rulers of the state.” (Medieval Europe from 395 to 1270, pp. 120-121.)
4. It uprooted three of the ten tribes in its pursuit of power. (See Daniel 7:8, 24.) “I might cite three [tribes] that were eradicated from before the pope out of the list first given, viz., the Heruli under Odoacer, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths”. (Apocalyptica, Volumes III, 139)
5. It was a radically different kingdom from the first ten kingdoms. (See Daniel 7:8.) The Papacy was an ecclesiastical and political kingdom, while the first ten were merely political or civil kingdoms.
6. It would have a singular male leader at its head, for it has the eyes and mouth of a man. (See Daniel 7:8.)
   “The pope is the absolute monarch of this whole structure. Elected for life by a committee of princes, the cardinals, he has exclusive power to appoint new princes as vancancies occur, and the princes have no power to discipline him or to remove him after they have once elected him.” (Communism, Democracy, and Catholic Power, p. 51)
7. It would speak great words or blasphemy against God. (See Daniel 7:25.) Jesus was falsely accused of blasphemy because He claimed divinity and the ability to forgive sins. (See John 10:33; Luke 5:20-21.) But when a mere mortal claims divinity or the ability to forgive sins, he is blaspheming. (see Daniel 7:21, 25.)

The Papacy has made such blasphemous claims – By dismissing the idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God, and exhorted Catholics to confess more often to their priests. The popes claims to be God on earth. Pope Leo XIII said, “We hold upon the earth the place of God Almighty.” (Pope Leo XIII, Encyclical Letter of June 20, 1894.

8. It would change “times and laws.” (See Daniel 7:25.) The following is from a Catholic cathechism:
   “Question: Have you any other way of proving that the Church has power to institute festivals of precept? “Answer: Had she not such power,…she could not have substituted the observance of Sunday the first day of the week, for the observance of Saturday the seventh day -a change for which there is not Scriptural authority.” (A Doctrinal Catechism 3rd Edition p. 174.)

The Vatican admits that changing the Sabbath from the seventh to the first day of the week is not biblical. In fact, she recognizes her Sunday Sabbath as the mark of her authrority over Scripture! “Sunday is our mark of authority… The church is above the Bible, and this transference of Sabbath observance is proof of that fact.” (The Catholic Record, London, Ontario September 1, 1923)

9. It would persecute God’s faithful people. Did the Papacy “wear out the saints of God”? (See Daniel 7:25) and Revelation 12.) “That the Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has ever existed among mankind, will be questioned by no Protestant who has a complete knowledge of history.” (History of the Rise and influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe, Volume II, p. 32)

There are many wonderful Christians in the Catholic communion. They cannot be held accountable for the political intrigues and unchristlike practices for which the Papacy, down through the ages, is responsible.

10. It would have supremacy over the nations” … until a time and times and the dividing of time” (Daniel 7:25). How long is a “time, times, and the dividing of time”? We find the answer in Scripture.

According to Revelation 12:6, 14, “a time, and times, and half a time” equals “a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” In other words, “a time” equals one year, “times” equals two years, and “half a time” equals 6 months. Three years and six months is the same as 42 months or 1260 days. A biblical calender year is 360 days. Therefore, 360 360 360 180 = 1260 days
But wait! How could any entity accomplish all these in only 1260 literal days? In Bible prophecy, a “day” represents a “year.” (See Numbers 14:33-34; Ezekiel 4:5-6.)

Did the Papacy rule for exactly 1,260 years? If the Papacy began its temporal rule in A.D. 538 under Emperor Justinian, 1260 years would bring it exactly to the year 1798.
Napoleon’s general Berthier entered Rome on the tenth of February, 1798, captured and exiled the pope and proclaimed Rome to be a republic. (The Modern Papacy, p.1)

THE REST OF THE STORY
Did the power of the Papacy end here? No! Prophecies predict the reemergence of the Papacy as a political and religious superpower in the end-times. The Bible reveals that the Papacy will regain her lost power, will once again persecute dissenters, and will become the head of a global political order.

But if prophecy is all doom and gloom, it fails in its purpose to :shine as a light in a dark place” (2 Peter 1:19). Nebuchadnezzar’s dream ended with the coming of Christ and the destruction of all earthly oppressors and despots. Daniel’s vision ended with the judgment, when evil and its perpetrators are destroyed and God’s people are given possession of the earth (Daniel 7:26, 27). These “saints of the most high” include those from every nation, kindred, tongue and people who love God and others more than themselves. (See Revelation 7:9; Matthew 25:31-36.)

Daniel chapters two and seven give us confidence that good will triumph over evil. Because every other detail of the prophecy has been fulfilled, we may trust that Christ’s coming kingdom is just as sure.

And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Revelation 14 : 6

Americans who don’t have their REAL IDs will still be allowed to fly after the May 7 deadline, but they will face extra screening and delays at the airport.

In the mountains of Piedmont, on the plains of France and the shores of Holland, the progress of the gospel was  marked with the blood of its disciples. But in the countries of the North it found a peaceful entrance. Students at Wittenberg, returning to their homes, carried the reformed faith to Scandinavia. The publication of Luther’s writings also spread the light. The simple, hardy people of the North turned from the corruption, the pomp, and the superstitions of Rome, to welcome the purity, the simplicity, and the life-giving truths of the Bible. GC 240.4

Homeland Security Sec. Kristi Noem made the announcement during a House Appropriations Committee hearing on Tuesday. Noem said 81% of travelers already have IDs that comply with the REAL ID requirements and added that security checkpoints will also be accepting passports and tribal identification when the deadline hits Wednesday.

REAL ID is a federally compliant state-issued license or identification card that Homeland Security says is a more secure form of identification. It was a recommendation by the 9/11 Commission and signed into law in 2005, but implementation has been repeatedly delayed.

As the opposition rises to a fiercer height, the servants of God are again perplexed; for it seems to them that they have brought the crisis. But conscience and the word of God assure them that their course is right; and although the trials continue, they are strengthened to bear them. The contest grows closer and sharper, but their faith and courage rise with the emergency. Their testimony is: “We dare not tamper with God’s word, dividing His holy law; calling one portion essential and another nonessential, to gain the favor of the world. The Lord whom we serve is able to deliver us. Christ has conquered the powers of earth; and shall we be afraid of a world already conquered?”
Persecution in its varied forms is the development of a principle which will exist as long as Satan exists and Christianity has vital power.  GC 610.1 – GC 610.2

REAL ID REJECTION BY AMERICANS MAY COME DOWN TO ONE SURPRISING FACTOR

Obtaining a REAL ID includes more stringent requirements for verifying a person’s identity than has been used in the past with non-REAL ID driver’s licenses. The switch to this new form of identification has caused a lot of chaos and confusion, with many travelers expressing fear they won’t be able to get a REAL ID before the Wednesday deadline.

Travelers without a REAL ID can use their passport, but even without that there are still alternatives to the new requirement, though they just might add delays to your trip and aren’t guaranteed to work.

In the sixteenth century the Reformation, presenting an open Bible to the people, had sought admission to all the countries of Europe. Some nations welcomed it with gladness, as a messenger of Heaven. In other lands the papacy succeeded to a great extent in preventing its entrance; and the light of Bible knowledge, with its elevating influences, was almost wholly excluded. In one country, though the light found entrance, it was not comprehended by the darkness. For centuries, truth and error struggled for the mastery. At last the evil triumphed, and the truth of Heaven was thrust out. “This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light.” John 3:19. The nation was left to reap the results of the course which she had chosen. The restraint of God’s Spirit was removed from a people that had despised the gift of His grace. Evil was permitted to come to maturity. And all the world saw the fruit of willful rejection of the light.
The war against the Bible, carried forward for so many centuries in France, culminated in the scenes of the Revolution. That terrible outbreaking was but the legitimate result of Rome’s suppression of the Scriptures. ( GC 265.1 – GC 265.2

Passengers will be required to fill out a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Form 415, also known as a Certification of Identity form, and if the TSA officials are able to confirm the details given to them, passengers will be allowed to go through the security checkpoint and board their flight. Passengers who go this route may be subject to additional pat-downs, questioning or other extra security screening.

As the controversy extends into new fields and the minds of the people are called to God’s downtrodden law, Satan is astir. The power attending the message will only madden those who oppose it. The clergy will put forth almost superhuman efforts to shut away the light lest it should shine upon their flocks.  GC 607.1

India said it conducted targeted military strikes against Pakistan, an expected move after it pledged retaliation for a militant attack last month in Kashmir that killed 26 people.

India said in a statement early Wednesday that it conducted “a precise and restrained response” that was “designed to be non-escalatory in nature.” It said that it only targeted “known terror camps” and hit no Pakistani civilian, economic or military targets — a statement disputed by Pakistan.

India’s military later said that Pakistan forces fired artillery into India-controlled portions of Kashmir.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called India’s actions a “cowardly attack” and said the nation would retaliate. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry released a separate statement saying that women and children died in the attack.

“Pakistan has a full right now to respond in a befitting manner to the conflict imposed on us,” Sharif said in a statement. “The enemy won’t be allowed to achieve its goals.”

India said that National Security Advisor Ajit Doval briefed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio after the strikes. Rubio had sought to de-escalate tensions, speaking with both sides in recent days.

US President Donald Trump, speaking in the Oval Office on Tuesday, called the situation “a shame.”

“They’ve been fighting for a long time,” Trump said. “I just hope it ends very quickly.”

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said in a television interview that India’s planes never entered Pakistan airspace during the strikes, which the military said only targeted civilians, and that the country will retaliate. Pakistan airspace was closed after the Indian strike, Pakistan International Airlines Corp. spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said in a text message.

Ties between the nuclear-armed South Asian rivals have rapidly deteriorated in the wake of the Kashmir attack, which India has called an act of terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had accused Pakistan of involvement and vowed to punish those responsible. Pakistan has denied any links to the attacks.

India called its military strike “Operation Sindoor,” a reference to the sacred vermillion powder married Hindu women wear along their hairline. Survivors in the April 22 attack said that men were shot while their wives and children watched.

Tensions had also escalated following the Kashmir attack after India suspended a long-standing Indus Waters Treaty, with Pakistan saying earlier in the day that India has almost entirely stopped the flow of water across the border through the Chenab river, which is crucial for farm irrigation.

Futures on India’s stock benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index slid on the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City. The index closed 0.3% lower in Mumbai trading Tuesday. Non-deliverable forwards on the Indian rupee pointed to a weakening of the currency following the news of the strikes.

“The wildcard is the Pakistani response to this,” said Aroop Chatterjee, managing director for macro strategy and emerging markets at Wells Fargo in New York. “If it’s similarly measured then we can potentially de-escalate.”



India and Pakistan are two of the world’s most acrimonious neighbors, and the long-running tensions between them center on the border region of Kashmir, an area in the Himalayas claimed in full — and ruled in part — by both. New Delhi, for decades, has been frustrated by what it sees as the Pakistan military’s support for terror groups that strike inside its territory.



Skirmishes in the border areas have continued in the past few days and both nations took steps to show their operational readiness. Pakistan conducted surface-to-surface missile tests this week, highlighting its military might and India ordered mock drills across several states to ensure preparedness amid the standoff.



Since achieving independence from Britain in 1947, India and Pakistan have fought several times over the disputed Himalayan region. The most recent prolonged fighting occurred in 1999, when Pakistani troops infiltrated Kargil, an Indian-controlled district in Kashmir. That lasted for several months until Pakistani forces withdrew from locations on the Line of Control, the de facto border.



The last time the two sides came close to an all-out war was in 2019, when a suicide bomber killed 40 members of India’s security forces. Jaish-e-Mohammed (Soldiers of Mohammed), a Pakistan-based jihadi group, claimed responsibility at the time, prompting India to respond about two weeks later with its first airstrikes on Pakistani soil since 1971.
