Archaeologists excavate ancient churches from african kingdom, Two earlier medieval churches discovered in Eritrea Jezebel Seal of The Beast Decree Letters

And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth of it in money.1 Kings:21:2

And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.Daniel:7:25

But notwithstanding all the efforts to establish Sunday sacredness, papists themselves publicly confessed the divine authority of the Sabbath and the human origin of the institution by which it had been supplanted. In the sixteenth century a papal council plainly declared: “Let all Christians remember that the seventh day was consecrated by God, and hath been received and observed, not only by the Jews, but by all others who pretend to worship God; though we Christians have changed their Sabbath into the Lord’s Day.”โ€” Ibid.,  pages 281, 282. Those who were tampering with the divine law were not ignorant of the character of their work. They were deliberately setting themselves above God.
A striking illustration of Rome’s policy toward those who disagree with her was given in the long and bloody persecution of the Waldenses, some of whom were observers of the Sabbath. Others suffered in a similar manner for their fidelity to the fourth commandment. The history of the churches of Ethiopia and Abyssinia is especially significant. Amid the gloom of the Dark Ages, the Christians of Central Africa were lost sight of and forgotten by the world, and for many centuries they enjoyed freedom in the exercise of their faith. But at last Rome learned of their existence, and the emperor of Abyssinia was soon beguiled into an acknowledgment of the pope as the vicar of Christ. Other concessions followed.  An edict was issued forbidding the observance of the Sabbath under the severest penalties. (See Michael Geddes,  Church History of Ethiopia,  pages 311, 312.) But papal tyranny soon became a yoke so galling that the Abyssinians determined to break it from their necks. After a terrible struggle the Romanists were banished from their dominions, and the ancient faith was restored. The churches rejoiced in their freedom, and they never forgot the lesson they had learned concerning the deception, the fanaticism, and the despotic power of Rome. Within their solitary realm they were content to remain, unknown to the rest of Christendom.
The churches of Africa held the Sabbath as it was held by the papal church before her complete apostasy. While they kept the seventh day in obedience to the commandment of God, they abstained from labor on the Sunday in conformity to the custom of the church. Upon obtaining supreme power, Rome had trampled upon the Sabbath of God to exalt her own; but the churches of Africa, hidden for nearly a thousand years, did not share in this apostasy. When brought under the sway of Rome, they were forced to set aside the true and exalt the false sabbath; but no sooner had they regained their independence than they returned to obedience to the fourth commandment. (See Appendix.)
These records of the past clearly reveal the enmity of Rome toward the true Sabbath and its defenders, and the means which she employs to honor the institution of her creating. The word of God teaches that these scenes are to be repeated as Roman Catholics and Protestants shall unite for the exaltation of the Sunday.
The prophecy of Revelation 13 declares that the power represented by the beast with lamblike horns shall cause “the earth and them which dwell therein” to worship the papacyโ€”there symbolized by the beast “like unto a leopard.” The beast with two horns is also to say “to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast;” and,  furthermore, it is to command all, “both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,” to receive the mark of the beast. Revelation 13:11-16. It has been shown that the United States is the power represented by the beast with lamblike horns, and that this prophecy will be fulfilled when the United States shall enforce Sunday observance, which Rome claims as the special acknowledgment of her supremacy. But in this homage to the papacy the United States will not be alone. The influence of Rome in the countries that once acknowledged her dominion is still far from being destroyed. And prophecy foretells a restoration of her power. “I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Verse 3. The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. After this, says the prophet, “his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” Paul states plainly that the “man of sin” will continue until the second advent. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the revelator declares, also referring to the papacy: “All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life.” Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the honor paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman Church.
Since the middle of the nineteenth century, students of prophecy in the United States have presented this testimony to the world. In the events now taking place is seen a rapid advance toward the fulfillment of the prediction. With Protestant teachers there is the same claim of divine authority for Sundaykeeping, and the same lack of Scriptural evidence, as with the papal leaders who fabricated miracles to supply the place of a command from God. The assertion that God’s judgments are visited upon men for their violation of the  Sunday-sabbath, will be repeated; already it is beginning to be urged. And a movement to enforce Sunday observance is fast gaining ground.
Marvelous in her shrewdness and cunning is the Roman Church. She can read what is to be. She bides her time, seeing that the Protestant churches are paying her homage in their acceptance of the false sabbath and that they are preparing to enforce it by the very means which she herself employed in bygone days. Those who reject the light of truth will yet seek the aid of this self-styled infallible power to exalt an institution that originated with her. How readily she will come to the help of Protestants in this work it is not difficult to conjecture. Who understands better than the papal leaders how to deal with those who are disobedient to the church?
The Roman Catholic Church, with all its ramifications throughout the world, forms one vast organization under the control, and designed to serve the interests, of the papal see. Its millions of communicants, in every country on the globe, are instructed to hold themselves as bound in allegiance to the pope. Whatever their nationality or their government, they are to regard the authority of the church as above all other. Though they may take the oath pledging their loyalty to the state, yet back of this lies the vow of obedience to Rome, absolving them from every pledge inimical to her interests.
History testifies of her artful and persistent efforts to insinuate herself into the affairs of nations; and having gained a foothold, to further her own aims, even at the ruin of princes and people. In the year 1204, Pope Innocent III extracted from Peter II, king of Arragon, the following extraordinary oath: “I, Peter, king of Arragonians, profess and promise to be ever faithful and obedient to my lord, Pope Innocent, to his Catholic successors, and the Roman Church, and faithfully to preserve my kingdom in his obedience, defending the Catholic faith, and persecuting heretical pravity.”โ€”John Dowling,  The History of Romanism,  b. 5, ch. 6, sec.  55. This is in harmony with the claims regarding the power of the Roman pontiff “that it is lawful for him to depose emperors” and “that he can absolve subjects from their allegiance to unrighteous rulers.”โ€”Mosheim, b. 3, cent. 11, pt. 2, ch. 2, sec. 9, note 17. (See also Appendix note for page 447.)
And let it be remembered, it is the boast of Rome that she never changes. The principles of Gregory VII and Innocent III are still the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. And had she but the power, she would put them in practice with as much vigor now as in past centuries. Protestants little know what they are doing when they propose to accept the aid of Rome in the work of Sunday exaltation. While they are bent upon the accomplishment of their purpose, Rome is aiming to re-establish her power, to recover her lost supremacy. Let the principle once be established in the United States that the church may employ or control the power of the state; that religious observances may be enforced by secular laws; in short, that the authority of church and state is to dominate the conscience, and the triumph of Rome in this country is assured.
God’s word has given warning of the impending danger; let this be unheeded, and the Protestant world will learn what the purposes of Rome really are, only when it is too late to escape the snare. She is silently growing into power. Her doctrines are exerting their influence in legislative halls, in the churches, and in the hearts of men. She is piling up her lofty and massive structures in the secret recesses of which her former persecutions will be repeated. Stealthily and unsuspectedly she is strengthening her forces to further her own ends when the time shall come for her to strike. All that she desires is vantage ground, and this is already being given her. We shall soon see and shall feel what the purpose of the Roman element is. Whoever shall believe and obey the word of God will thereby incur reproach and persecution. GC 577.2 – GC 581.2

Deliverance of Jews:As a Thief in the Night, December 17

But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. 1 Thessalonians 5:1, 2. UL 365.1

We know not the exact time of our Lord’s coming. But whether it be this year, or next year, or in several years, Christ has told us that He will come as a thief in the night. He says unto all, โ€œWatch.โ€ To very, very many, He will come in such an hour as they think not. At the time of His coming, men will be asking, โ€œWhere is the promise of His coming?โ€ … UL 365.2

Satan, the originator of evil, is now revealing his power in the children of men. This is his hour, and the power of darkness. Apparently he controls the world. The gospel messenger will find that there is a power moving the world to greater and still greater opposition to Christ and His message. The last great conflict between the forces of good and evil is spoken of as โ€œa time of trouble such as never was.โ€ The violence which fills the earth will exceed that which existed before the destruction of the old world. UL 365.3

Satan is working with all his power to hinder the work of God. If God’s people occupy a portion of their time in teaching the delusive sentiments of Satan, the kingdom of evil will rejoice. When those having a knowledge of the path over which God has led us give heed to seducing spirits and depart from the faith, the time and effort required to correct the evils that follow are so much time and effort taken from the work of proclaiming the gospel message. We must warn our brethren and sisters not to give heed to false theories, and to beware of those who have allowed themselves to be ensnared. UL 365.4

If ever God’s watchmen needed to be on their guard, it is now…. The trumpet must give a certain sound. There will be a general proclamation of truth, the whole earth will be enlightened with the glory of God, but those only will recognize the light who have sought to know the difference between holiness and sin. UL 365.5

When Satan shall have accomplished his work of ensnaring all who will subject themselves to his deceptive influence, when he shall have finished his work of scattering abroad, Christ will rise up and bring deliverance to every one whose name is found written in the book of life. Satan and his followers will be destroyed. Then โ€œthey that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.โ€โ€”Letter 268, December 17, 1903, to Dr. David Paulson, at the time director of the American Medical Missionary College in Chicago and editor of The Life Boat

The Letter: A Message for Our Earth

The agencies which will unite against truth and righteousness in this contest are now actively at work. God’s holy word, which has been handed down to us at such a cost of suffering and blood, is but little valued. GC 582.3

Pope Francis wrote a pastoral letter called Laudato Siโ€™ (โ€œPraise Beโ€),a reflection on the state of the planet that confronted the looming calamity of human impact on the Earth and all life on it. One of the most ambitious and revolutionary papal statements in history, it was directed not just to Catholics, but to every single person in the world.

The letter sparked both controversy and praise as the Pope took a passionate stance on the issue of climate change, stressing how those whose voices are not heard โ€” the poor and the disenfranchised โ€” are suffering the most devastating effects of the crisis.

From the very beginning of the great controversy in heaven it has been Satan’s purpose to overthrow the law of God. It was to accomplish this that he entered upon his rebellion against the Creator, and though he was cast out of heaven he has continued the same warfare upon the earth. To deceive men, and thus lead them to transgress God’s law, is the object which he has steadfastly pursued. Whether this be accomplished by casting aside the law altogether, or by rejecting one of its precepts, the result will be ultimately the same. He that offends “in one point,” manifests contempt for the whole law; his influence and example are on the side of transgression; he becomes “guilty of all.” James 2:10. GC 582.1

โ€œThe Letter: A Message for Our Earthโ€ follows the ramifications of the Popeโ€™s groundbreaking letter and takes viewers around the world to see firsthand how climate change is affecting the daily lives of people.

With extraordinary access to Pope Francis โ€” credited with doing more to fight the climate emergency than any other leader on the planet โ€” โ€œThe Letterโ€ tells the stories of people from around the globe whose everyday lives have been profoundly impacted by global warming. As part of his effort to show the world the calamitous effects of climate change, the Pope invited individuals to the Vatican to speak on behalf of four groups โ€” the poor, the Indigenous, youth and nature.

The stories of these activists are featured in the film: Arouna Kandรฉ, a climate change refugee from Senegal; Chief Dadรก Borarรญ from the Marรณ Indigenous Lands of the Brazilian Amazon, under attack from uncontrolled deforestation; teenaged climate activist Ridhima Pandey of India; and scientists Greg Asner and Robin Martin from Hawaii, who are raising awareness of the devastating coral loss that threatens more than 25 percent of marine life.

With many, a philosophical idol is enthroned in the place of Jehovah; while the living God, as He is revealed in His word, in Christ, and in the works of creation, is worshiped by but few. Thousands deify nature while they deny the God of nature. Though in a different form, idolatry exists in the Christian world today as verily as it existed among ancient Israel in the days of Elijah. The God of many professedly wise men, of philosophers, poets, politicians, journalistsโ€”the God of polished fashionable circles, of many colleges and universities, even of some theological institutionsโ€”is little better than Baal, the sun-god of Phoenicia. GC 583.1

Inspired by the writings of his namesake, St. Francis, Pope Francis chose the saintโ€™s words, โ€œLaudato Si,โ€™โ€ as the title of his letter. In the film, he speaks with the scientists and activists about his hopes for the future.

Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. Daniel:2:2

Seeโ€œThe cry of freedom has to come from a new generation,โ€ he says. โ€œYouโ€™re the ones inheriting the Earth.โ€ He emphasizes that the leaders of popular movements and scientists have to work together. โ€œItโ€™s like a choir,โ€ he says. โ€œWe have to sing together. And right now unity means saving Mother Earth, saving biodiversity, saving ourselves and our children.โ€

DOHA, Qatar (AP) โ€” Hymns echo through the spacious, blue-walled church. The congregants listen to the Gospel and the homily. They kneel, eyes closed and hands clasped in prayer or palms turned skyward. They line up to receive Communion as a choir belts out: โ€œLord, for my sake, teach me to take one day at a time.โ€

In many ways, the service at the Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary feels like a standard Sunday Mass. But at this church in Qatar, the small Gulf emirate hosting the World Cup, there are some tweaks.

The church sits in a โ€œreligious complexโ€ housing other Christian denominations. Its building looks non-descript from the outside, with no crosses on its exterior. Sunday Mass is celebrated also on Fridays and Saturdays, the weekend days in the conservative Muslim country.

โ€œThis is something very unique here in the Middle East,โ€ said parish priest, the Rev. Rally Gonzaga. “Our Sunday is Friday.โ€

From Masses to baptisms, weddings and confessions, the church provides a window into the religious life of Catholic expatriates in Qatar. Mass is offered in multiple languages, including English, Arabic, Konkani, Tagalog and Sinhala, to cater to Catholics from India, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and other countries. While Qatar is unusually full of visitors now for the World Cup, migrant workers already make up the majority of the countryโ€™s population of about 3 million.

โ€œWhen I was in the Philippines, I only catered to the Filipinos. But here, (there are) different nationalities and then they have different cultures,โ€ Gonzaga said. โ€œI could feel the real spirit of the church, the universal church,โ€ he said, adding the different communities learn from each other.

Non-Muslim religious groups in Qatar include Hindus, Roman Catholics and Buddhists, with smaller groups of Anglicans, Protestants, Egyptian Copts and others, according to a U.S. Department of Stateโ€™s report on international religious freedom for 2021.

Sunni and Shiite Muslims and eight Christian denominations constitute the registered religious groups; unregistered religious groups are illegal, but Qatari authorities generally permit them to practice their faith privately, the report added.

The complex known as โ€œChurch City,โ€ located on government-owned land, provides worship space for Christian denominations, โ€œwith clear government instructions that Christian symbols such as crosses, steeples, and statues were not permitted on the exterior of church buildings,โ€ the report said. Gonzaga said having no crosses outside was out of โ€œrespectโ€ for the country and its people.

Like other Gulf nations, Qatar has faced criticism, particularly in the run-up to the World Cup, for its use of low-paid migrant workers to build and support skyscrapers, roads and other projects amid concerns for their rights. Qatari authorities say they have taken steps to improve labor conditions. Rights groups, while crediting Qatar with reforms, have called for more to be done.

The needs of migrant workers who have left behind wives and children to work for long stretches in Qatar and other Gulf countries condition much of the pastoral care that the Catholic Church provides in that region.

During a visit to Bahrain last month, Pope Francis lamented that much labor can be โ€œdehumanizingโ€ and encouraged the promotion of equal rights for workers. Worshippers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other Gulf countries packed the Bahrain national stadium for Francisโ€™ big Mass.

The pope delivered a similar message in 2019 in Abu Dhabi where he also called for greater access to citizenship for residents of different beliefs.

Gonzaga described a religious life within the church complex in Qatar that includes Masses, celebrations for Christmas and catechism classes where children are taught the basics of the faith from prayers to the sign of the cross.

โ€œMany people think that there is no Christian church here,โ€ Gonzaga said at his office, surrounded by statues of the Virgin Mary, a crucifix and illustrations of the sacraments. โ€œThatโ€™s why they are surprised when they see … that we could do everything that we are doing inside the compound of the church.”

Fratelli Tutti and Laudato Si Common Good Global Definition of a church

A newly erected Christmas tree just outside the church building towers over churchgoers waiting to take photos with it.

Another priest, the Rev. Albert, said there are some differences in marking Christmas here from what he was used to in India.

โ€œThere, we can go for carol singing on the streets and we can go door-to-door and we can express our joy,โ€ he said. โ€œBut, here, itโ€™s not possible. … We respect the feeling of other religion(s).โ€

Carol singing and other festivities take place within the complex, he added.

Qatari law restricts public worship for non-Islamic faiths and criminalizes proselytizing on behalf of an organization, society, or foundation of any religion other than Islam, the State Departmentโ€™s report said.

Outside the complex, priests visit Christian inmates and go into hospitals to respond to requests for Communion, confessions or anointing of the sick.

โ€œI go there wearing this,โ€ Gonzaga said, pointing to his Franciscan habit, adding he feels accepted and respected. โ€œI donโ€™t encounter any problem,โ€ he said.

Some Catholics living far from the complex would like to see a new church in a different part of the country, Gonzaga said. That might have helped Catholics like Christopher Battad. He used to work in an area that is far from the complex and couldnโ€™t regularly make the trip to church, which made him feel guilty.

โ€œI just feel that something is less in my heart,โ€ he said.

Still, he would pray, use a rosary and sometimes watch online services streamed from the Philippines, where heโ€™s from. Now, he lives closer to the church.

Riya Sebastian, who moved to Qatar from India, said sheโ€™s been finding solace and joy at the church.

โ€œIt gives more peace and happiness in my life,โ€ she said. โ€œChristmas is coming and when this is going on, we should … beautify our hearts to receive our Jesus Christ.โ€

Brethren
Battle Creek, Michigan
November 1883
This letter is published in entirety in 13MR 329-333.

Brethren:
Brethren, we are far behind in our missionary work, both at home and in foreign countries. We are a people who claim to believe solemn and sacred truth, and our works in proclaiming the truth should correspond to our profession.

Great trouble will soon arise among the nations which will not cease until Jesus comes. The world is becoming more and more lawless. The churches are united in their efforts to restrict religious liberty.

What are we as a people doing in this crisis? Are we purifying our souls by obedience to Christ’s words? Are we humbling our hearts before God and confessing our sins? Are we seeking with earnestness and contrition of soul Him who is the source of our strength? Are we claiming the promises, believing that Jesus pardons our transgressions and forgives our sins? Are we educating ourselves to overcome all temptation to murmur and complain?

Brethren, as never before we need to press together, unitedly following with calm faith and confidence Him who has prepared His throne in the heavens and whose kingdom ruleth over all. God has not forsaken His people, and our strength lies in not forsaking Him.

Christ died to redeem us. By the infinite price with which He ransomed us He has shown His love for us. He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should believe in Him and have eternal life.
With pity and compassion, with tender yearning, the Lord is looking upon His tempted and tried people. For a time the oppressors will be permitted to triumph over those who know God’s holy commandments.

All are given the same opportunity that was granted to the first great rebel to demonstrate the spirit that moves them to action. It is God’s purpose that every one shall be tested and proved to see whether he will be loyal or disloyal to the laws which govern the kingdom of heaven.

To the last, God permits Satan to reveal his character as a liar, an accuser, and a murderer.

Thus the final triumph of his people is made more marked, more glorious, more full and complete. The words of the prophet will then be fulfilled, “The day of vengeance is in my heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.” Isaiah 63:4. The song of God’s people will be, “The Lord reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims, let the earth be moved. The Lord is great in Zion; he is high above his people.” Psalm 99:1, 2.

Now and onward to the close of time the people of God should be wide-awake, not trusting in their own wisdom, but wholly in the wisdom of their Leader.

They should set aside days for fasting and prayer. Entire abstinence from food should not be required, but they should deny themselves the food they usually enjoy and partake of a plain, simple diet. No one should lift up his soul unto vanity, walking in self-indulgence and pride, for this is a time that demands genuine humiliation and most earnest prayer.

We are nearing the most important crisis that has ever come upon the world. If we are not wide-awake and watching, it will steal upon us as a thief. Satan is preparing to work through his human agencies in secrecy.

There is in our churches a decided want of love for Christ and for one another. Christlike simplicity is looked upon as weakness.

There is little clear spiritual discernment. Wrongs remain unconfessed. The transgression condemned in the law of God is on the increase in our borders.

Sin is cherished, and the result is hardness of heart.

Because those who are handling sacred things do not walk in the light, that light is becoming darkness to them, and how great is that darkness.

They are making strange mistakes in reading character. Men who do not possess moral worth are exalted, while those who are endeavoring to seek the Lord and walk in His steps are not appreciated. This danger will become more and more apparent.

We must awake to the perils that are opening around us. All Pharisaism, all self-righteousness must be separated from the soul. Then we shall realize that we need Christ’s righteousness, and we shall accept it by faith.

In our conferences it is revealed that the brethren do not see eye to eye in understanding the Word of God. There is among us a manifest want of searching the Scriptures. We must know the reasons of our faith.

The importance and solemnity of the scenes opening before us demand this, and on no account must the spirit of complaining be encouraged.

Are you in danger of cherishing malice, bitterness, and wrath if plans are introduced that do not harmonize with your ideas? Is not this indulging a war spirit rather than a spirit of meekness and humility? Might you not better search the Scriptures together, with earnest prayer?

Ever we need to manifest kindness and true courtesy. We may have to plead most earnestly before legislative councils for the right to exercise independent judgment, to worship God according to the dictates of our conscience.

Thus in His providence God has designed that the claims of His Holy law shall be brought before men in the highest authority. But as we do all we can as men and women who are not ignorant of Satan’s devices, we are to manifest no bitterness of feeling. Constantly we are to offer prayer for divine aid. It is God alone who can hold the four winds until the angels shall seal the servants of God in their foreheads.

The Lord will do a great work in the earth. Satan makes a determined effort to divide and scatter His people. He brings up side issues to divert minds from the important subjects which should engage our attention.

Individually we are to feel the importance of uniting in the firm bonds of Christian fellowship. With one heart and mind we are to prepare for the conflict, with faith laying our petitions before the mercy seat. The throne of God is arched by the bow of promise, and the prayers offered in simplicity and faith will be heard. It is God’s glory to answer the supplications of His people.

I have been instructed in regard to the danger of drawing apart. Let us leave to Satan and his agents the cruel world of accusing and faultfinding. Our work is to repent before God because of our unbelief and want of love for Him who died for us and for one another. The gold of love and faith is wanting in our ranks. Christ declares, “Nevertheless, I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left they first love.” Revelation 2:4.

Many are holding the truth only with the tips of their fingers. They have had great light and many privileges. Like Capernaum they have been exalted to heaven in this respect. In the time of test and trial that is approaching, they will become apostates unless they put away their pride and self-confidence, unless they have an entire transformation of character. 4LtMs 1.1883000500 – 4LtMs, Lt 5, 1883, par. 11

Russian Orthodox Church warns against mandatory biometric data collection

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has called upon the State Duma speaker to prevent the discrimination of people who choose not to share their biometric data with the state.

As reported byย Patriarchiaย (in Russian), Patriarch Kirill wrote a letter to Vyacheslav Volodin asking him to review the draft legislation on personal information use submitted to the Duma on 12 October.

GC 578.2 – GC 581.2

The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan by Ellen G White

The Church head cited the 2020 โ€œHoly Synod Epistleโ€ to the Orthodox community, according to which: โ€œthe use of digital identifiers,โ€ โ€œautomated decision-making,โ€ and the โ€œcollection of personal data, including health informationโ€ must all be overseen by public institutions. The definition would also include the church, Patriarch Kirill sustained.

In July 2022, politicians approved a bill for banks to share customer biometrics with the state.

Kirill added that the church agrees with experts suggesting no database of personal information, including biometric data, can be completely leak-proof.

โ€œTaking into account the virtually uncontrolled collection of biometric data by commercial organizations for a number of years, the very need for state regulation of this area seems justified,โ€ reads the letter, as automatically translated.

Because of this, the Russian Orthodox Church supports the โ€œfundamental and unconditional right of the citizens to refuse biometric identification, with absolute guarantees of non-discrimination.โ€

And while the draft legislation has reportedly been discussed with the Russian Ministry of Digital Development and the dedicated Duma committee for informational policy, it has not been presented to the public for open discussion.

โ€œDespite the urgency of the issue and the need to develop a balanced approach to the regulation of biometric data, no public hearings were held,โ€ Kirill wrote.

โ€œThe parent community expresses the most noticeable concern, which justifies our position on the complete ban on the collection of biometric data from children.โ€

The letter comes weeks after Moscowโ€™s municipal IT department pitched the creation of a centralized facial recognition data storage facility to the city politicians. The Moscow Metro uses face recognition, city surveillance systems are appearing in the provinces, to track journalists, and for childrenโ€™s access to schools.

The Great Controversy Book by Christ and Satan

China said Monday it would retire an app used to track travel to areas with COVID-19 cases, a milestone in the country’s rapid turn away from its zero-tolerance coronavirus strategy.null

Beijing has effectively thrown in the towel on zero-COVID, last week announcing an end to large-scale lockdowns, mandatory quarantine in central facilities, and a broad relaxation of testing measures.

And the central government is now beginning to unwind years of hardline policymaking, with the state-run “Communications Itinerary Card”, which tracks whether someone has been to a high-risk area based on their phone signal, to go offline at 12 am Tuesday.

The “Itinerary Card” was a central part of China’s zero-COVID policy, with millions of people required to key in their phone numbers to produce its signature green arrow to travel between provinces or enter events and some public places.

First rolled out in 2020 with a four-tier system that assigned different colours depending on users’ predicted level of COVID exposure, it was tweaked multiple times before a final change this year shortened the tracking period from 14 to seven days.

It is only one of a panoply of tracking apps that have governed everyday life in China throughout the pandemic, with most people still using local “health codes” run by their city or province to enter shops and offices.

The changes have been introduced despite a top health expert warning of a surge in Omicron cases that could tear through the country where millions of elderly are still unvaccinated.

‘End of an era’

But social media users nevertheless hailed the Itinerary Card’s retirement, noting the symbolism of the central government shutting down its main tracking app.

Many posted screenshots of their “last” logins.

“Bye bye, this announces the end of an era, and also welcomes a brand new one,” one person wrote on the Twitter-like Weibo platform.

“Goodbye itinerary card, concerts here I come,” wrote another.

Others asked what would become of the mountains of data collected by the app.

“The Itinerary Card and other similar products mean vast amounts of personal information and private data,” wrote one Weibo user.

“I hope there will be mechanisms and measures to log out and delete this.”

Kendra Schaefer, tech partner at research consultancy Trivium China, said the “political win of returning to normalcy is ginormous”.

“All the government actually loses by deleting those apps is a fast-track method of keeping certain people at home based on a public safety rationale,” she wrote on Twitter.

“As COVID controls disappear, the rationale disappears, and the benefits of removal outweigh the perks of keeping it,” she added.

COVID ‘spreading rapidly’

But that return to normalcy means the country now faces a surge of cases it is ill-prepared to handle, with millions of elderly still not fully vaccinated and underfunded hospitals lacking the capacity to take on huge numbers of patients.

The country has one intensive care unit bed for 10,000 people, Jiao Yahui, director of the Department of Medical Affairs at the National Health Commission, warned last week.

Official reported cases in the country have dropped sharply from all-time highs last month, but top Chinese health expert Zhong Nanshan warned in state media Sunday that the prevailing Omicron variant was “spreading rapidly” through the country.

The easing of COVID restrictions has also released pent-up demand for domestic travel, with state broadcaster CCTV saying Monday that flights from Beijing’s two main airports were expected to soon return to 70 percent of 2019 levels.

China reported 8,626 domestic COVID cases Monday, but with testing no longer mandatory for much of the population the numbers are believed to be much higher.

Tesla and Twitter CEO Elon Musk triggered a social media firestorm on Sunday after suggesting that US Covid-19 czar Dr. Anthony Fauci should be investigated and prosecuted for allegedly lying under oath about the funding of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab in China.

In what initially appeared to simply be a humorous dig, Musk also posted a meme showing the retiring White House chief medical adviser whispering โ€œJust one more lockdown, my kingโ€ in President Joe Bidenโ€™s ear.

However, after Fauciโ€™s name was propelled to the top of Twitterโ€™s trends with over 600,000 mentions, Musk apparently felt the need to elaborate why he thought the controversial face of Americaโ€™s response to the pandemic should be investigated.

โ€œAs for Fauci, he lied to Congress and funded gain-of-function research that killed millions of people,โ€ Musk said in response to one critic, adding โ€œnot awesome imo.โ€

Fauci, 81, who plans to retire by the end of the month, led Americaโ€™s controversial Covid-19 response, which was marked by his flip-flopping on issues such as the efficacy of masks and herd immunity targets. Shortly after Fauci announced that he would step down as Bidenโ€™s chief medical adviser and as director of the NIHโ€™s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), US Senator Rand Paul demanded that the Biden administration preserve documents and messages that could become evidence in a potential probe.

โ€œFauciโ€™s resignation should not prevent a full-throated investigation into the origins of the pandemic. He must be required to testify under oath regarding any discussions he participated in concerning the Wuhan lab leak. His policies destroyed lives,โ€ Paul tweeted.

The senator previously accused Fauci of directing public funding to gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab and lying about it under oath in congressional testimony, as the two sparred repeatedly in Senate hearings.

Gain-of-function is the modification of pathogens to enhance them in various potential ways, including transmissibility. The rationale is that scientists can study new strains and find ways to stop them before similar adaptations emerge naturally.

The โ€˜lab leakโ€™ theory โ€“ that the coronavirus leaked from a Chinese lab โ€“ was popularized by former US President Donald Trump, who made the allegation amid a trade war with China. Major US media organizations and tech platforms initially labeled it as โ€˜disinformationโ€™ and tried to suppress the theory from public discourse. However, after Musk took over Twitter, the company stopped enforcing its Covid-19 โ€œmisleading information policy.โ€

Manifest Destiny Military Glory Monarchy : US will not allow China to โ€˜reshape its region,โ€™ world order: Austin

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. โ€• Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin redoubled his call for Congress to pass a federal budget amid fears stalled talks will lead to another stopgap funding measure.

In a keynote address at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley, California, on Saturday, Austin highlighted investments in military hardware, in research and in the Pacific region, adding โ€œweโ€™ve got more to do.โ€

null

โ€œSo let me urge Congress to pass an on-time appropriation so that we can get the capabilities to further strengthen our deterrence,โ€ Austin said.

He pushed Congress to act on spending legislation as talks on an overdue fiscal 2023 spending package have stalled. Some Republican House members have pressed for a final plan to be postponed until early next year, when they will have control of the chamber and stronger negotiating power.

Congress approved a short-term budget extension in September after lawmakers failed to agree upon a full-year spending plan by the start of the new fiscal year, Oct. 1. That temporary extension is set to run out on Dec. 16.

null

On Monday, Austin sent lawmakers a letter seeking a full-year budget for his department as soon as possible, warning another short-term spending extension could imperil military readiness and family support efforts.

In wide-ranging remarks Saturday, Austin declared the U.S. would not let China โ€œreshape its region and the international order to suit its authoritarian preferences.โ€

โ€œLet me be clear: weโ€™re not going to let that happen. That begins with Americaโ€™s combat-credible deterrence,โ€ Austin said. And weโ€™re going to sustain and sharpen our warfighting advantages so that the PRC can never conclude that aggression is in its interest.โ€

[1]Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. [7]Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up. [8]Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews. [9]They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar, O king, live for ever. [10]Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, shall fall down and worship the golden image: [11]And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth, that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. [12]There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego; these men, O king, have not regarded thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. [13]Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king. [14]Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do not ye serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up?

On Friday, Northrop Grumman and the Air Force unveiled the new long-range stealth bomber, the B-21 Raider. Austin called it an โ€œextraordinary display of combat power โ€” and a major advance for American deterrence.โ€

โ€œAmerican power, innovation and values make the U.S. military the strongest fighting force in human history. And make no mistake: weโ€™re going to keep it that way,โ€ Austin said.

Austin singled out several key investments, including a land-based hypersonic missile battery, an air-launched hypersonic cruise missile and the USS Zumwalt, intended as the first Navy platform to field hypersonic weapons.

He highlighted the budget requestโ€™s inclusion of $34 billion to continue modernizing the nuclear triad of air, land and sea capabilities and to bolster nuclear command, control, and communications. That arsenal is the โ€œultimate backstopโ€ to deter attacks against the U.S. and allies.

Also at the forum, Austin and U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman signed off on theย joint Office of Strategic Capital. The office was set up to secure U.S. private-sector investment in critical defense-technology areas.

โ€œThis kind of change doesnโ€™t always move as smoothly or as quickly as Iโ€™d like,โ€ Austin said, โ€œBut we are determined to change the way that the Pentagon does business โ€” and to create a true innovation ecosystem.โ€

Austin said Americaโ€™s competition with China and Russia requires โ€œthe full force of American innovation and American industryโ€ to strengthen the militaryโ€™s deterrent power.

Dec 8 (Reuters) – Globally, people are experiencing inflation at levels not seen for decades as prices surge for essentials like food, heating, transport and accommodation. And though a peak could be in sight, the effects may yet get worse.

How did we get here? In two words: pandemic and war.

A long and comfortable period of scant inflation and low interest rates ended abruptly after COVID-19 struck, as governments and central banks kept locked-down businesses and households afloat with trillions of dollars of support.

That lifeline kept workers from joining dole queues, businesses from going broke and house prices from crashing. But it also knocked supply and demand out of kilter as never before.

By 2021, as lockdowns ended and the global economy grew at its fastest post-recession pace in 80 years, all that stimulus money overwhelmed the world’s trading system.

GC 578.2 – GC 581.2

The Great Controversy Between Christ and Satan

Factories that had been idled could not ratchet up fast enough to meet demand, COVID-safe rules caused labour shortages in retail, transport and healthcare, and the recovery boom caused a spike in energy prices.

If that wasn’t enough, Russia invaded Ukraine in February and Western sanctions on the major oil and gas exporter sent fuel prices yet higher.

WHY IT MATTERS

Known as a “tax on the poor” because it hits those on low incomes the hardest, double-digit inflation has exacerbated inequalities worldwide. While wealthier consumers can rely on savings built up during pandemic lockdowns, others struggle to make ends meet and a growing number rely on food banks.

With winter setting in across the northern hemisphere, that squeeze on living costs will tighten as fuel bills soar. Workers have taken strike action in sectors from healthcare to aviation to demand that wages keep pace with inflation. In most cases, they are having to settle for less.

Cost of living concerns dominate the politics of rich nations โ€“ in some cases relegating other priorities, such as climate change action.

While recent falls in gasoline prices have eased some of the pressure, inflation remains a top focus for U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration. France’s Emmanuel Macron and Germany’s Olaf Scholz are stretching their budgets to channel billions of euros into support programmes.

But if things are tough in industrialised economies, rocketing food prices are worsening poverty and suffering in poorer countries, from Haiti to Sudan and Lebanon to Sri Lanka.

The World Food Programme estimates an extra 70 million people worldwide have been driven closer to starvation since the start of the Ukraine war in what it calls a “tsunami of hunger”.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR 2023?

The world’s central banks have embarked on steep interest rate hikes to cool demand and tame inflation. By the end of 2023, the International Monetary Fund expects global inflation to have fallen to 4.7% – just less than half its current level.

The aim is for a “soft landing” in which the cooling-off happens without housing market crashes, business bankruptcies or surging joblessness. But such a best-case scenario has proven elusive in past encounters with high inflation.

From U.S. Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell to the European Central Bank’s Christine Lagarde, there is growing talk that rate-hike medicine may taste bitter. On top of that, risks surrounding the big uncertainties โ€“ the Ukraine war, tensions between China and the West โ€“ are skewed to the downside.

The IMF’s regular October outlook was one of the bleakest for years, stating: “In short, the worst is yet to come and for many people, 2023 will feel like a recession.”
