The man — a 47-year-old American citizen living in Taiwan — was stabbed in the spine while attempting to climb over the historic monument’s fence. He was possibly attempting to get a better view, according to Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.

Why? Trump himself explained the strategy last year when he described how he planned to defeat his Democratic opponent, then-Vice President Kamala Harris, in the White House election.

After the speech, the government reported that the economy shrank during the first quarter of 2025 as Trump’s tariffs disrupted business.

The years after World War I and the Russian Revolution in 1917, along with a wave of immigrants, led to what’s known as the “Red Scare” of 1920, a period of intense paranoia about the potential for a communist-led revolution in America.

Heretofore those who presented the truths of the third angel’s message have often been regarded as mere alarmists. Their predictions that religious intolerance would gain control in the United States, that church and state would unite to persecute those who keep the commandments of God, have been pronounced groundless and absurd. It has been confidently declared that this land could never become other than what it has been—the defender of religious freedom. But  as the question of enforcing Sunday observance is widely agitated, the event so long doubted and disbelieved is seen to be approaching, and the third message will produce an effect which it could not have had before. “McCarthyism” after World War II meant the hunt for supposed communists. It’s named for Sen. Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin Republican who conducted televised hearings at the dawn of the Cold War that drove anti-communist fears to new heights with a series of threats, innuendos and untruths.

Culturally, the merest suggestion that someone was “soft” on communism could end careers and ruin lives. “Blacklists” of suspected communists proliferated in Hollywood and beyond. McCarthy fell into disgrace and died in 1957.

The senator’s chief counsel during the hearings, Roy Cohn, became Trump’s mentor and fixer as Trump rose as a real estate mogul in New York. The Cold War was more than three decades old. The threat of nuclear war was pervasive.

Communism started to collapse in 1989 and the Soviet Union was dissolved two years later. It’s now Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin.

But communism — at least in one form — lives on in China, with which Trump is waging a trade war that could result in fewer and costlier products in the United States. By week’s end, Trump was acknowledging the potential consequences of his government stepping in: Americans might soon not be able to buy what they want, or they might be forced to pay more. He insisted China would be hurt more by the tariffs.

The real modern debate, Robertson says, is not between capitalism and communism, but about how much the government needs to step in — and when. He suggests that Trump is not really debating communism vs. capitalism anyway.

“Calling people who advocate for slightly more government involvement ‘communists’ is typical misleading political rhetoric that, unfortunately, works really well with busy voters who do not have a lot of time to think about technical definitions and economic paradigms,” he said in an email. “It is also really helpful (to Trump) because it is inflammatory, making people angry, which can be addictive.”

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — A woman was killed early Saturday in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki when a bomb she was carrying exploded in her hands, police said.

The 38-year-old woman apparently was carrying the bomb to place outside a nearby bank around 5 a.m., police said.

Several storefronts and vehicles were damaged by the explosion.

Police said the woman, whom they did not publicly identify, had a criminal record related to drugs and prostitution and had been involved in at least one robbery and thefts in the past. The Greek police’s division for organized crime was investigating the incident, while authorities were also investigating whether the woman might have had ties to extreme leftist groups.

In April, a new group calling itself Revolutionary Class Struggle claimed responsibility for a bomb that exploded in central Athens near the offices of Hellenic Train, Greece’s main railway services operator, and the planting of another bomb near the Labor Ministry in early February.

The explosion near the train offices resulted in limited damage to the building and no injuries. It had been preceded by an anonymous call to local media 40 minutes before the blast warning about the device, leading police to evacuate and cordon off the area.

The group that claimed responsibility said the bombing was part of an armed struggle against the state.

The bombing at the train offices came shortly after the second anniversary of Greece’s worst railway disaster, in which 57 people were killed and dozens more injured when a freight train and a passenger train heading in opposite directions were accidentally put on the same track.

A seafood restaurant on Cape Cod is being demolished after a massive blaze tore through the building on Sunday morning.

According to Sandwich Fire Chief John Burke, firefighters responded to Captain Scott’s Restaurant Tupper Road around 5:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, they were met with heavy smoke and flames pouring from the rear of the building.

Firefighters initially launched an interior attack, but the floor became unsteady within about 20 minutes, and they were forced to attack from the exterior, Burke said.

Several people who work for Gossios rushed to the restaurant as soon as they heard news of the fire.

While Gossios and his team persevere through this loss, he shared his gratitude for the firefighters who came to their aid, and to the patrons who continue to support his business, . “Thank you for all the support you give. Thank you for saying you’re sorry for what had happened,” he said.

One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion at the scene but did not require hospitalization. No other injuries were reported.

Chief Burke said firefighters struggled to extinguish the fire due to wind directions and how old the building was.

A total of 44 firefighters responded to the scene, and it took seven hours until the fire was officially declared extinguished at 12:30 p.m.

While fighting the fire, Sandwich crews noticed outside that a natural gas regulator for the building was burned off by the flames, which caused a gas leak in the building. Burke said the gas company had to dig into the street to shut off the gas.

The image, which was shared on Trump’s social media and the official White House account on Friday evening, shows an AI-generated image of the president wearing papal clothes and sitting on a throne.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, was asked by reporters about the image on Sunday after he had finished a service at a church in Rome. In his response, Dolan used the Italian words, “brutta figura,” meaning the post was embarrassing.

The United States and Ukraine on Wednesday signed a minerals deal after a two-month delay, in what President Donald Trump’s administration called a new form of US commitment to Kyiv after the end of military aid.

Ukraine said it secured key interests after protracted negotiations, including full sovereignty over its own rare earths, which are vital for new technologies and largely untapped.

Trump had initially demanded rights to Ukraine’s mineral wealth as compensation for US weapons sent under former president Joe Biden after Russia invaded just over three years ago.

After initial hesitation, Ukraine has accepted a minerals accord as a way to secure long-term investment by the United States, as Trump tries to drastically scale back US security commitments around the world.

Announcing the deal in Washington, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said it showed “both sides‘ commitment to lasting peace and prosperity in Ukraine.”

Backed by the international community, Zelensky has ruled out any formal concession to Russia of Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula seized in 2014.

President Donald Trump may have gotten his front row seat at Pope Francis’ funeral, but the Pope rebuked him from beyond the grave anyway.

The posthumous criticism came after Trump was mobbed by a group of world leaders, including France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of Pope Francis’s funeral.

The pressure from European leaders appeared to pay off after Trump sat down briefly with Zelensky before the funeral, and then the White House announced that he would meet with him again afterwards.

Trump responded angrily, calling it “disgraceful” for a religious leader to question his faith and accusing Mexico of manipulating the Pope. The bitter and very public exchange saw Trump label Francis as “a very political person.”

The homily may only have been an implicit rebuke, but after such a public clash over building walls, there can be no mistake that it was a deliberate and pointed one from the Vatican in front of millions watching around the world.

Trump and the Pope had a cordial meeting in 2017 despite the public barbs that had been thrown, but tensions simmered beneath the surface. Francis continued to speak out against Trump’s policies, condemning his withdrawal from climate agreements and his rhetoric on immigration. Trump and his supporters, in turn, painted Francis as a political operator meddling beyond his spiritual role.

The severe weather is expected to come in two waves.

First round

The first round of storms will hit the metro area around 5 a.m. Monday, bringing with it the potential for large hail.

We will catch a break by early afternoon. This will allow our atmosphere to regroup and destabilize for the second wave.

Second round

The greatest threat of severe storms is in the late afternoon/early evening.

All severe modes are possible: large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes.

Museum and library funding cuts hurt everyone

Libraries and museums across Washington — and the nation — are under threat. On March 14, the Trump administration issued an executive order to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Staff were placed on leave, and grant termination notices went out to state libraries, effective April 1.

This decision strikes at the heart of our communities. IMLS grants have supplemented local funding to provide high-speed internet in rural areas, Braille books for the visually impaired and vital digital resources. In Tacoma, a 2021 IMLS grant helped launch the Community Archives Center, now a national model. Nationwide, IMLS supported 35,000 museums and 123,000 libraries while costing less than 0.003% of the federal budget.

Dismantling the IMLS undermines education, economic development and access to information. As a long-time librarian and museum advocate, I urge Tacomans and all Washingtonians to speak out and reach out to your networks around the nation as well. We must call on legislators to protect funding for these essential institutions that support learning, preserve history and strengthen community ties.

Preserve Washington’s student aid

l attend Tacoma Community College studying Electrical Engineering. My goal is to set roots in Washington and become an engineer for the state. I want to build better infrastructure for low-income communities. I am a recipient of financial aid, and understand the financial struggles students face. My financial aid covers tuition, but it doesn’t cover transportation, food, textbooks, nor other basics needed to simply attend college. Never mind those who also have to pay for rent, phone, and other bills. The legislature has been considering lowering aid while increasing tuition costs. This action would be a detriment to the state of Washington. We need the legislature to pass the substitute bill to instead make financial aid permanent and not raise tuition. Most of my classmates use financial aid and need support to succeed. We are hardworking, driven, intelligent people who want to be participating members of society. Without the state’s continued investment, many would have to drop out, leaving Washington without so many of the engineers it needs to grow. Washington needs to reject balancing the budget on students’ backs and continue to invest in our future.

Pope’s legacy on climate change

Laudato Si’, is a 184-page letter (encyclical) written by the late Pope Francis that was published in May of 2015.

It focuses on care for the natural environment and all people, as well as broader questions of the relationship between God, humans and the Earth.

Francis says that instead of viewing humanity as having “dominion” over the earth, we must see that everything is interconnected and that all of creation is a “kind of universal family.” Nature cannot be seen as something apart from humanity, or merely the place where we live. He says that our social and environmental crises are thus one complex crisis that must be solved holistically.

Laudato Si’ had a profound impact all around the world, but eight years later in 2023, Pope Francis published Laudate Deum. Laudate Deum is 73 paragraphs where Francis calls for speedier action against the climate crisis. Pope Francis felt his message had not been heard in Laudato Si’. April 22 was Earth Day. Now is the time to hear the words of Pope Francis and put them into action against the climate crisis to save our common home.
