Shall I crucify your King?: Gaza’s uprising against Hamas is a ‘stunning turning point’ nobody can ignore

All who in that evil day would fearlessly serve God according to the dictates of conscience, will need courage, firmness, and a knowledge of God and His word; for those who are true to God will be persecuted, their motives will be impugned, their best efforts misinterpreted, and their names cast out as evil. Satan will work with all his deceptive power to influence the heart and becloud the understanding, to make evil appear good, and good evil. The stronger and purer the faith of God’s people, and the firmer their determination to obey Him, the more fiercely will Satan strive to stir up against them the rage of those who, while claiming to be righteous, trample upon the law of God. It will require the firmest trust, the most heroic purpose, to hold fast the faith once delivered to the saints.

But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Palestinians protest against Hamas in northern Gaza
Palestinians protest against Hamas in northern Gaza – Ahmad Salem/2025 Bloomberg Finance LP

The day Gaza-watchers never thought would come – could ever come – appears to have finally arrived. This week, for the first time since Hamas’s attack on Israel two Octobers ago, Gazans took to the streets to demand the terror organisation end its bloody reign over their blighted strip. “Hamas out!” they chanted bravely.

But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
Acts 17 : 5

“Decarbonizing Churches”

It was a remarkable display – at once shocking and yet not entirely surprising. Shocking because Hamas – which was voted into power back in 2006 – maintains a violent, deadly, ruthless hold on Gaza’s civilians that has always felt inviolable.

But the protests, brewing for the moment in cities such as Khan Yunis and Beit Lahia, make sense. Gaza is once again engulfed in flames as the Hamas ceasefire with Israel fell apart earlier this month. The terror group refuses to release the remaining Israeli hostages and disarm – and Israel is mounting a retaliatory offensive now destroying much of what little is left of the Strip, while threatening to annex the rest. At the start of the month, Israel cut off the supply of goods to Gaza in tandem with the renewed fighting; the ceasefire provided time for Gaza to restock, but experts suggest those supplies could be depleted within weeks.

The result: thousands of Palestinians displaced – yet again – while new ceasefire talks splutter in Cairo. And so, with little in terms of relief in sight, Gazans have taken to the streets to demand change.

Protests for regime change are nothing new for places like Turkey and the Balkans. But they’ve been both rare and deadly in Gaza – having appeared (much like now) mostly following a military conflict with Israel. And yet here we are, with three days now of anti-Hamas gatherings that reportedly expanded on Wednesday to include chants against Al-Jazeera – for allegedly refusing to broadcast protests from the day before.

Demonstrations, which appear loosely – yet clearly – Organised via social networks_-A Revolution! “Away With Him!”

[31] And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. [35] And when he came upon the stairs, so it was, that he was borne of the soldiers for the violence of the people. [36] For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.
Acts 21 : 31, 35-36

Hundreds have joined the demonstrations, which appear loosely – yet clearly – organised via social networks like Telegram. Major pro-Palestinian social media influencers are promoting the gatherings with little apparent concern for their safety.

Last week Israeli defence minister Israel Katz practically demanded a Gazan revolt; A Few Troubling US! Uprising!

The Gaza protests are a watershed moment for the Hamas war with Israel. Bloodthirsty, with negligible concern for the people it rules, Hamas has managed to lord over millions with a military force probably numbering in only the tens of thousands. With so few controlling so many, the notion of a popular uprising and regime change – a Gazan “Arab Spring” – has long been posited. Last week Israeli defence minister Israel Katz practically demanded a Gazan revolt; the alternative, he explained, is “complete destruction and ruin”.

[7] Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; [8] That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that showeth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or showeth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

The early Christians were often called to meet the powers of darkness face to face. By sophistry and by persecution the enemy endeavored to turn them from the true faith. At the present time, when the end of all things earthly is rapidly approaching, Satan is putting forth desperate efforts to ensnare the world. He is devising many plans to occupy minds and to divert attention from the truths essential to salvation. In every city his agencies are busily organizing into parties those who are opposed to the law of God. The archdeceiver is at work to introduce elements of confusion and rebellion, and men are being fired with a zeal that is not according to knowledge. AA 219.2

Gazans could have ousted Hamas over the years!

As always, such talk was almost immediately poo-pooed. The well-regarded pollster Dahlia Scheindlin wrote in Haaretz last week that “the idea that Gazans could have ousted Hamas over the years is one of the most fraudulent themes in a war flooded with lies, and one that must be laid to waste”. Mostly, Scheindlin wrote, popular uprisings such as those we’re seeing now in Turkey, Belgrade and yes, Gaza, may generate headlines, but rarely result in those regimes actually changing (including in Israel itself, where hundreds of thousands have marched almost weekly against prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu for one transgression or another).

Festus knew nothing of the conspiracies of the Jews to murder Paul, and he was surprised at this appeal to Caesar. However, the words of the apostle put a stop to the proceedings of the court. “Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.”
Thus it was that once more, because of hatred born of bigotry and self-righteousness, a servant of God was driven to turn for protection to the heathen. It was this same hatred that forced the prophet Elijah to flee for succor to the widow of Sarepta; and that forced the heralds of the gospel to turn from the Jews to proclaim their message to the Gentiles. And this hatred the people of God living in this age have yet to meet. Among many of the professing followers of Christ there is the same pride, formalism, and selfishness, the same spirit of oppression, that held so large a place in the Jewish heart. In the future, men claiming to be Christ’s representatives will take a course similar to that followed by the priests and rulers in their treatment of Christ and the apostles. In the great crisis through which they are soon to pass, the faithful servants of God will encounter the same hardness of heart, the same cruel determination, the same unyielding hatred. AA 430.3 – AA 430.4

“But Israelis insist that of all the people in the world who have failed to dislodge a disastrous, corrupt, authoritarian or oppressive leader,” Sheindlin noted with quizzical irony, “one heroic people alone could have done it: Palestinians in Gaza.” She apparently believed they never will.

Sheindlin may ultimately be proven correct. On Thursday, the protests appeared to stumble as Hamas – in its first official comment on the gatherings – branded them as directed against Israel, rather than Hamas leadership. Other Gaza-watchers have accused the Palestinian Authority of fomenting the demonstrations as part of its effort to take over the Strip if and when the war ever ends. Others still have suggested, via social media, that the protests are entirely fabricated – a Hamas ploy to hint at reform while its fists remain resolutely iron-clad. The lack of any concerted crackdown is certainly curious.

Whatever lies behind what is happening in Gaza, however, the protests must be embraced with a pause in the cynicism that has defined the war so far. Gazan civilians are doing what few would have ever believed. For today, at least, the protesters need – and deserve – the world’s support.
